Bottles and feet

As I mentioned before Jacob is starting to reach out to his toys and grab things and those things now include his feet.  He has been kicking his legs up in the air for a long time when he is lying down, I’ve been waiting for the day that he discovers that there are feet at the end of those legs and he finally has.  Now we’ll see how long it takes him to try and get those feet in his mouth.

I snapped some pictures of him while he was playing with his feet on Sunday, when I downloaded them to my computer these took my breath away.  I mean there is NO WAY Justin could deny that this is his child

IMG_9135edThere are times when I think he looks like me, most of the time I think he looks like Justin, but there are times when it literally takes me by surprise how much he looks like his dad.  It’s almost like I have a glimpse into what Justin was like as a baby.

IMG_9137edI’m sure the preppy collared shirt has a bit to do with it too 🙂

One change that Jacob decided to make recently is refusing the bottle. We figured this out on Mother’s Day when we tried to give him a bottle after I had a glass of wine with dinner.  Nope, he wanted nothing to do with it.  At first we thought it might have just been that specific occasion, but we’ve tried to give him a bottle every day since then with no luck.  So…after advice from friends and online research we have been trying different things to try and get him back on to a bottle.  There was no change this past week, but we are not giving up.  Luckily I am home with him everyday so it is not too big of a urgent problem, except for one day of the week when I go into the office for work.  Last week I fed him right before I left, then Justin brought him to my office so I could feed him his lunch, then I was home in time for the next feeding.  The way it is looking right now, he is probably going to have to do that again this week and that will get old really quick.  Plus I am starting to feel like I will never be able to leave him for more than a few hours at a time, so my visions of doing anything fun outside of baby are rapidly dwindling.  Let’s hope we get this figured out soon! All prayers are greatly appreciated!

After snapping a few of our weekly pictures, I looked at them on my camera to see if we got a good one and I noticed that he was slouched down, so I went to go sit him up and he spit up all over himself.  I’m sure that was his way of saying he was done taking pictures.  So I give you our slouched down (but smiling) 19 week old.

Ninety

My Grandma turned ninety this month!  And she looks fantastic!  I am pretty sure I know her secret, ladies take note…attitude!  My grandma is one of the most positive, uplifting, loving people I know and she has a great attitude about everything.  I truly believe that a lot of faith, courage, and a positive attitude can go a loooong way.  She is very social and loves to spend time with family and all her friends.  For as long as I can remember she has always loved playing cards and she still does.  She has an infectious laugh and a twinkle in her eye.  I have a feeling that if we were the same age we would have been good friends, but I would much rather have her as a grandma, she is pretty special.

I hope that I can live my life with the same positive outlook and attitude that she does.  I mean how many ninety year olds do you know that are talking about redecorating their living room,  “The walls need some color, new drapes and couch“.   She is such an inspiration

My mom, Jacob and I drove in to see her on her birthday.  We had lunch with her and all her girlfriends.  Grandma brought a bottle of wine for everyone at our table and got cake for everybody in the retirement home where she lives. It was so fun to see her interact with the staff and other residents, they all love her and she was showered with gifts, cards, balloons and lots and lots of hugs and birthday wishes.  It was a special day.

After lunch we went back to her apartment where she snuggled with Jacob for a while and opened up her birthday cards and gifts

That weekend, my aunt and uncle hosted a big party with all the family and friends of the family to celebrate her birthday.  The party was on the day of my moms birthday so we celebrated her too!

A year of firsts

This is going to be a year full of firsts, and a pretty awesome one is my first Mother’s Day as a mom.  I remember the weekend of Mother’s Day last year when I found out I was pregnant.  I remember the feeling of excitement, but not wanting to get too ahead of myself since it was still so early.  It is hard to believe a year has gone by, so much has happened!

Being a mom has been the most rewarding, challenging and life altering thing I’ve done.  And I’ve only done it for 4 months…I am so looking forward to many, many more years of being Jacob’s mom…and I know those years will bring many more rewarding, challenging and life altering events & times and I promise him and pray that I will be the best mom I can be.

Whenever we have a free day on a weekend, we’ve started looking online to see what fun things are going on in San Diego that day and then go explore.  We really try to take advantage of the fact that we live in America’s greatest city!  We started off our day at church, then we headed downtown to Seaport Village. It was a beautiful San Diego day, we walked along the water, in and out of the shops and had an early dinner with a view.

Here’s my 18 week old reason why Mother’s Day was so special this year.

And the flowers I got at church with my Mother’s Day card from Justin.  Very similar to last year, maybe this will become a yearly photo.

Mothers Day

Hope you had a wonderful Mother’s Day!

17 weeks

We’ve been busy!  My mom was in town for a week, we celebrated my grandma’s 90th (!) birthday, my mom’s birthday and we had Jacob’s baby dedication at church.  Then Monday morning after all that I woke up with a sore throat and have been fighting a cold all week.  So I am a bit behind and have lots to share with you, but first, I’m a little late in posting this weeks picture and wanted to get it up before next weeks picture 🙂

17 weeks
IMG_8972edWe had Jacob’s 4 month check up on Thursday and his doctor is very pleased with his progress.  He is a happy, healthy baby boy! Jacob had a little discomfort with his shots at this visit.  He was clingy and grumpy the rest of the day, I ended up giving him some baby Tylenol and by bath time that night he was smiling again.

  • Jacob weighs 15 lbs 4 oz (45th percentile)
  • Jacob is now 26 inches long (84th percentile)
  • The circumference of his head is 16.25 inches (60th percentile)

This week Jacob has shown an increased interest in his toys and instead of just looking at them he is reaching for them and of course putting them in his mouth once he gets a hold of them.  With the exception of a few nights here and there he is still sleeping great, anywhere from 8-11 hours at a time.

Have a great weekend & I’ll be back with more soon!

A day in the life

Now that Jacob is more awake and alert during the day, I am often trying to find new ways to entertain him.  He no longer will tolerate you sitting and snuggling with him (except at the end of the day we do get some good snuggle time), he needs to be up and moving around.  So we have a variety of things we do for entertainment around here in between feedings, naps and diaper changes.  Usually we start our day with a conversation at the changing table about what we are going to do for the day.  Jacob has found his voice and when I pause from talking he answers me with his newfound coos and sounds and plenty of smiles. That is by far my favorite time of day 🙂

One of Jacob’s favorites is the Bumbo chair. I love this, because it supports him so he can sit upright.  I put it in front of the mirror so he can look at his own reflection.

Gasp! Who is that baby??

IMG_8494edIMG_8513edWe play with his rattle (which we named Frankie the Fish, which to me kind of sounds like a mafia name?), and a squeaky giraffe (Georgie the Giraffe). When he is done playing with toys we like to read a book, a favorite is Brown Bear, Brown Bear what do you see.

Hey mom, see that book over there, come on, open it up.

IMG_8509edOf course he always gets captivated by the reflection of the fan in the mirror so I turn the Bumbo around so he can see the fan, and watch the dog walking around the room.

Hey mom did you know there’s a black dog walking around behind you?

IMG_8518edThere is also a shelf for the Bumbo that will come in handy when we start introducing foods to Jacob.  For now we use it for more toys.

Hmmmm let’s see…how does this one work?

IMG_8542edAhhh I get it…but I would rather watch the fan

IMG_8538edThen there is the activity mat.  Jacob has come a long way from his earlier days of tummy time and we continue to work at it everyday.  I also put this in front of the mirror to encourage Jacob to look up at himself.

IMG_8554ed IMG_8587edOther times I roll a ball back and forth in front of him while he is doing tummy time to work on hand eye coordination.

IMG_8697ed IMG_8694edWhen mom needs a few minutes to do something my go to was the mobile to entertain Jacob, which he still enjoys, but now we’ve upgraded…Jacob has been kicking his legs so much lately, I went to get a jumper so all of his kicking could be put to good use!

IMG_8602ed

He loves it and is very content playing in it for a good amount of time which allows me time to get some work done while he is entertaining himself (that is if I can pry myself away from watching him, he is pretty entertaining!)

IMG_8686ed

We also enjoy getting some fresh air so we put the leash on Apollo and take him for a walk. Apollo really enjoys this part of the day!

IMG_8718edAnd that is a day in the life of this 4 month old!

4 months

Every week when we take these pictures, we look back through pictures of weeks 1 to present and we are always so amazed at how much he has grown!

16 wks - 8766There’s not a whole lot to report this week, he is doing great, sleeping well and we had a fun weekend out and about in San Diego.  The next 2 weeks we have a lot going on, so I will have some fun things to share with you.

Thanks for checking in!

My how she has grown

Remember the newborn photos I did last September? Well mom emailed me and wanted me to do 6 month photos of their little girl.  She chose Balboa Park as the setting and I love this location since there are so many different places to take pictures.  I was so excited to see her and see how much she has grown!  She is an absolute doll and is a pro at flashing her smile.

IMG_8100edWe went to the Spanish Village to take advantage of the colorful tiles

IMG_8132ed

One of my favorite things about girl clothes are the tutus.  When you pair them with pearls it can’t get much girlier than that!

IMG_8190bwIMG_8196edDad had recently taken her on a trip to India to meet some far away family and brought home this beautiful sari IMG_8253edWhen mom was showing me the different outfits she had in mind, I saw some cute grey boots at the bottom of the bag and I asked her what those were, she said “oh that is just a backup outfit if we have extra time”, I said lets see it.  She pulled out a denim skirt and a red top with white polka dots and the grey boots.  Now if you know me well you know I LOVE boots.  I can hardly wait until the cool fall weather arrives so I can put on my boots.  And if I love my boots that much, boots on a cute little girl are even better.  So I told mom that we were definitely going to use this outfit, no question, all because of the boots.  And it turned out to be one of my favorites! IMG_8274ed

We finished up the day with some fun shots with mom and dad. IMG_8392ed

IMG_8421edI had SO much fun doing this. When I got in the car and started driving home I realized how e.x.h.a.u.s.t.e.d I was!  I can’t wait to do it again!

Birthday celebrations

We’ve had a busy but fun few days!  Saturday was my birthday.  Justin’s parents and grandma came for the day and we had a nice lunch at Pacific Coast Grill with a beautiful view of the ocean! And they got their Jacob fix.

IMG_8582IMG_8585That night Jacob went to bed pretty early (and slept 9.5 hrs that night!) Justin and I stayed up, shared a bottle of wine and played cards (I won 🙂 ), just like we used to do all the time before we were parents.  On Sunday, we met up with a friend from work and her husband at a small local winery with another gorgeous view for lunch and of course a glass of wine.

Then today, a group of my girlfriends (and kiddos) all got together to celebrate the 3 of us whose birthdays are in April.  It was a pretty ambitious idea, we had 7 moms and 10 kids altogether.  But all in all, it went well, no major meltdowns, nobody got their eyes poked with a fork, no glasses were broken, we definitely were the loudest table in the restaurant (even though they sat us in the very back) and our poor waiter probably quit after we left!  As always I had my camera with me at all these events but only got it out after lunch to hand to a stranger to take a picture of us. Again, an ambitious idea to try and corral all these kids for a photo, but we did it.  It’s an imperfect photo, but I love it just as much.

407125_4924944401778_792925619_nThen I stole my friend’s photo from Facebook since it was better??

IMG_8630And in the middle of all this Jacob turned 15 weeks old, here’s our wild child!

IMG_8620Hope you have a wonderful week!

20 things…

It is a cool overcast day today and Jacob has been a snugly cuddle bug all day long, and I am loving it!  Daddy just came home from a meeting, so I passed our snuggle bug off to him so I could get something accomplished (like eat lunch) and he promptly fell back asleep (that’s what I do too when daddy is watching the Masters on the golf channel).

IMG_8484ed

Since we are all warm and fuzzy over here I thought it was the perfect day to share this.  I’ve seen it circulating on Pinterest and Facebook a few times.  Now that I have a son, it has a whole new meaning to me and I think it is a good reminder how instrumental parents are to shaping their children and teaching them about what kind of person to be.  Sure they will grow up and make their own choices, but you can talk to them about these kinds of things early and pray that they will make the right choices in life.

20 things a mother should tell her son
1. Play a sport.  It will teach you how to win honorably, lose gracefully, respect authority, work with others, manage your time and stay out of trouble.   And maybe even throw or catch.

2. You will set the tone for the sexual relationship, so don’t take something away from her that you can’t give back.

3. Use careful aim when you pee.  Somebody’s got to clean that up, you know.

4. Save money when you’re young because you’re going to need it some day.

5. Allow me to introduce you to the dishwasher, oven, washing machine, iron, vacuum, mop and broom.  Now please go use them.

6. Pray and be a spiritual leader.

7. Don’t ever be a bully and don’t ever start a fight, but if some idiot clocks you, please defend yourself.

8. Your knowledge and education is something that nobody can take away from you.

9. Treat women kindly.  Forever is a long time to live alone and it’s even longer to live with somebody who hates your guts.

10. Take pride in your appearance.

11. Be strong and tender at the same time.

12. A woman can do everything that you can do.  This includes her having a successful career and you changing diapers at 3 A.M.  Mutual respect is the key to a good relationship.

13. “Yes ma’am” and “yes sir” still go a long way.

14. The reason that they’re called “private parts” is because they’re “private”.  Please do not scratch them in public.

15. Peer pressure is a scary thing.  Be a good leader and others will follow.

16. Bringing her flowers for no reason is always a good idea.

17. Be patriotic.

18. Potty humor isn’t the only thing that’s humorous.

19. Please choose your spouse wisely.  My daughter-in-law will be the gatekeeper for me spending time with you and my grandchildren.

20. Remember to call your mother because I might be missing you.

Here’s our 14 week old snuggle bug!

14 wks - 8469edMy excitement about sleeping for 8 hours last week was short lived, as in the two days I blogged aboutHowever…these past two nights he has been sleeping 6 hours, then we have the 2 am feeding and then he sleeps for another 6 hours!  So I can’t complain, we will see what the next week will bring.

Happy Sunday!

The Fan vs The Mobile

At first I was not planning on getting a mobile for Jacob’s crib, I figured I would have the bouncy seat & swing that have things dangling down for him to look at and play with.  I really didn’t think I would lay him in his crib that often to watch a mobile spin around.  One day when he started waking up to the world around him, he started paying attention to the things hanging from the ceiling.  He still to this day LOVES to giggle and talk to the light hanging over the kitchen table regardless if it is turned on or not, it is his best friend. When I lay him in his crib to get him dressed I noticed him looking up at the letters we have hanging on the wall over his crib and if he is looking the other way he is absolutely captivated by the ceiling fan. I began to think that buying a mobile would be a good idea, it could entertain him while I am getting him dressed and he could lay in the crib and watch the mobile while I pick up around his room.  So $50 later he has a Noah’s Ark mobile spinning over his crib.IMG_7937

It has a mommy and daddy set of lions, monkeys, elephants and zebras.  Does he like it? Sure!

IMG_7922I would even go as far to say he loves it.  He spends plenty of time cooing and giggling at the animals going around.  But… if he gets a glimpse of the ceiling fan out of the corner of his eye,

IMG_7839forget the mobile he’s watching the fan.

IMG_7942Again, regardless if it is turned on or not the fan is waaaay cooler than the mobile.  If he is fussy, I turn on the fan and he starts to calm down. It has kind of become part of our bedtime routine…when he doesn’t want to go to sleep I turn on the fan, it catches his attention and it almost hypnotizes him and he watches it spin around until he can’t keep his eyes open anymore. I should have saved myself the $50 and hung some stuffed animals from the fan…but then that wouldn’t even be necessary, just a simple fan will do for this dude.
