The Cast

There’s this great gymnastics gym that I discovered through my MOMs group that has open play for toddlers 3 days a week for 1 hour.  For $5 they can run all over the gym, jump in the bounce house, play with the foam rollers, wedges, mats, hula hoops, balls, jump on the trampoline, etc…

IMG_2628

It is a great way to burn energy and Jake usually takes a nice long nap afterwards!  There is one section of the gym where the floor mats are different densities and some are more firm than others, one day we were playing in that area and Jake stepped between two of the mats he fell to his knees and cried out.   I was sitting just a few feet away, he crawled into my lap and just sat there holding his left foot.  I took off his socks to see if he scraped his foot and there were no visible signs of any injury.  So I figured he probably just scared himself so we sat there for a few minutes to give him a break.  Then I tried to get him up to walk around and the minute he would take one step he would get down on his knees and crawl.  He didn’t cry, he just wouldn’t walk.  That is when I figured that he probably did hurt himself.  So we got our stuff and I took him home, put him down for his nap and planned to see how he was when he woke up before calling the doctor.  He woke up from his nap and was acting his normal self, no crankiness, no crying, nothing, but he still wouldn’t put weight on his foot and anytime I tried to get him to walk, he would hold his foot and say “uh oh”…so I called his pediatricians office and they said we needed to go to urgent care since we would need x rays.  So I packed up some toys and food and loaded him up in the car and we were off to his first urgent care visit.  We were there for 3 hours and had two different x ray sessions and Jake was a champ the entire time, wooing the nurses with his charm and putting stickers on every surface he could find.

During the x ray sessions I couldn’t stay with him and had to watch through a glass window in the next room since I am pregnant and can’t be around the x rays while in use.  I gave him my phone so he could play his games to keep him distracted.  It didn’t even faze him, he was totally chill with the whole process.

IMG_2653

As I was watching I couldn’t help but get a bit teary eyed at the thought of my sweet boy with a broken bone and how proud I was at how well he was handling the whole process.  I kept thinking of all those parents who have watched their kids suffer through much much worse, such as childhood cancer or some other kind of painful ordeal.  And watching them go into the MRI machines, receive their chemo and radiation treatments and how strong those kids are.  I’ve heard it said so many times that kids feed off of your energy, and that is true, but I also believe that when the kids are being strong and brave, it helps the parents to be strong and brave as well.  When we were done the radiologist had already gone home for the day, so we had to wait until the next morning for the results of the x rays.  The urgent care doc was not too concerned and said he wasn’t going to put a splint on him since he could easily pull it off. So we went home.

The next morning we got a phone call that his ankle was fractured.  The good news is it is not the weight bearing bone (tibia) it is the smaller bone next to it (fibula) and the fact that he is so young and his bones are so “pliable” he would heal quickly.  They then told me to call a pediatric orthopedic group to follow up with them.  I called them right away and they told me that their first available appointment was 2 days later.  I said, “okay…well since his ankle is fractured and he doesn’t have any kind of splint or brace on it, should I be keeping him from putting weight on it?” (at the same time I’m thinking in my head, how the heck am I going to keep him from doing that?  The kid is constantly on the move!)  The nurse said “Oh!  He doesn’t have a splint on?  Can you come this afternoon?”  So that afternoon, we met the doctor and he agreed that the x rays showed that it was likely a fracture and he said since he’s not putting weight on it then he should get a cast, but he only has to wear it for 3 weeks.  I’m thinking…okay, no big deal, just a little cast to protect his ankle.  Nope, he got a full leg cast all the way up to his upper thigh.  The doctor said that if he put on a short leg cast then Jake would pull it off before we could leave the parking lot.

IMG_2700

Checking it out, hmmmm…what’s this thing all about?

IMG_2701

The first day, he was pretty chill and was content sitting on the floor surrounded by toys to play with.

Then he started wanting me to pick him up and carry him everywhere so he could be up higher and see what was going on.  He quickly learned how to crawl and scoot around with it and it didn’t take long after that when he figured out how to walk with it.  Justin was calling him our little pirate with a wooden leg.

Since he couldn’t get it wet, and we had to try to keep it “clean” we were not able to go to the beach, pool or playgrounds.  So I was keeping him busy doing things where he can ride along in the stroller or shopping cart.  We were running errands, going to the aquarium and when my mom was in town we went to the Safari Park.  We saw the tigers, elephants and watched the gorillas playing around.

Bath time became a two person job.  Some nights he just got a sponge bath and we called him clean.  However, anyone who has ever experienced an almost 2 year old boy, knows how dirty they get and whenever Jacob eats anything that involves syrup or any other kind of sticky, gooey substance he decides to wipe his hands in his hair.  So we were often giving him a “full” bath and needing to wash his hair as well.  I had the idea of getting his infant bath tub out and putting it on our bathroom counter. We wrapped the cast in a plastic bag and hung it over the side of the tub.  It worked…but again, this boy LOVES his bath and splashing the water is the BEST part, right!? So those nights became a scene from Waterworld in our bathroom and Justin and I (and the mirror and bathroom counters, walls and floor) were soaked!  After a few of those kind of nights, I had the bright idea to put the infant bathtub inside his bathtub so the water would be (somewhat) contained and easily drained.  So we finally got the bath time routine under control.  And the 3 weeks went by (kind of) fast.

We went back a week before Thanksgiving to get the cast off.  By then it was filthy, scraped up and the area around the toes was all worn down from him dragging it around.

IMG_2896

He was fascinated with the saw as the nurse was cutting it off of him, she found a sticker that he had stuck in there at some point 🙂   We got more x rays and the doctor said that he didn’t see any evidence of a healed fracture, so it was most likely just a really bad sprain.  They gave us the bottom half of his cast and an ACE bandage to use as a splint.  The doctor said not to expect anything from Jake soon and that it would take a little time for him to get back to normal.  He said to put the splint on him and let Jake decide/tell me when he wanted it off, and come back in 3 weeks for a follow up.

Since a sprain actually takes longer to heal than a fracture he still is pretty sore and occasionally will sign hurt while pointing to his foot.  He wore the splint for a couple days and stuck with crawling around.  About a week and a half after getting the cast off he started standing up and walking around slowly.  Every day he gets a little faster and more confident, and I’m sure he will be back to running full speed in no time. In the meantime, he is climbing on every surface he can find.  Every time I turn around he is standing on top of something with a big smile and giggle of accomplishment. Here’s to hoping that we don’t have any more casts in this family!

Senior Portriats

As I said before, it is that time of year where everyone wants family pictures done for their Christmas cards, so I’ve been really busy.  I love that kind of busy though, it is a lot of fun to be with these families and capture special moments with them.  All of the photography I’ve done has been babies, kids and families so when I was asked to do Senior portraits for a friend I was excited to have a different kind of project on my hands.  Not only was it different but having just one, adult subject who stays still and listens to you when you ask her to look at the camera or smile made it so much easier than the kiddos I am used to chasing around!

She choose the beach for her background so we headed to Torrey Pines State Beach to take advantage of the beautiful cliffs.  We had a great time walking up and down the beach taking pictures, talking about life, school, plans for her future and how lucky we were to live in America’s Finest City.  She really is a beautiful person on the inside and absolutely gorgeous on the outside!  See for yourself…

I will be back to share some more of my favorites from the other photo sessions I’ve done lately.

Because “I am going to be 35…”

Usually around 18-20 weeks of pregnancy your doctor will order you a fetal anatomy scan where they do an ultrasound to check the baby’s organs, measure the head/limbs, check the blood flow and just make sure everything looks good.  When I was pregnant with Jacob I just went to an ultrasound tech that was in the same building as my OB.  However, now that I am “going to be 35 years old when I deliver” (a phrase I am hearing a lot these days…) my OB sent me to a “Specialty OB” office to have my fetal anatomy scan.  Simply only because of my age.  I understand that the older the woman is there are more risks involved and they just want to check and make sure that all is well or be able to prepare you if all is not well.  As often as I hear the “going to be 35 years old when I deliver” I also remind them that my 35th birthday is only 13 days before my due date, so there is a chance I may still be 34 when this baby arrives, it is not like I am over the age of 35 yet.  Plus…since this is a frozen embryo pregnancy, then the baby was technically conceived when I was 32.  Anyway, it doesn’t bother me, if anything it gives me a peace of mind.

Yesterday morning was my ultrasound appointment.  When I was pregnant with Jacob the ultrasound tech kept the screen hidden from me and didn’t talk to me or tell me anything while she was doing it, until at the end she gave us a look at him and said he looks good.  This time around the ultrasound tech allowed me to see what she was looking at and explained what she was measuring or looking for, etc… and everything looked great!  Just like my last pregnancy we declined the genetic testing and the amniocentesis. The doctor came in and talked to us and confirmed that everything looks good and one thing we talked about was that the baby was measuring big, 10 ounces to be exact, which is common for IVF babies.  I didn’t ask what the “usual size” was at this point, but according to What to Expect When You Are Expecting…at 18 weeks the baby is around 5 oz.  So the doctor was predicting that he would probably come early, maybe around April 25th.

Here’s a recent picture of our big guy (yes, we confirmed again that it is indeed a boy, no doubt about it!)

18 wksThey also did a few views in 3D which was kind of creepy looking but kind of amazing at the same time.  Here he is with his hands up by his face.

Round two

For some reason when I originally posted this, the pictures were showing up sideways on mobile devices, but not on the computer, I’m hoping I fixed it. Sorry!

Life has been pretty busy these days.  It’s that time of year when everyone wants family photos done for their Christmas cards, so my weekends have been filled with photo shoots. Then my week nights are spent at my computer editing the pictures.  Soon I will get my favorite ones up here to share with you.  But before I post about anything else, there is something that I need to share…we are adding another baby to our family!  Yep, we did it again and we are pregnant.  We had one of our frozen embryos transferred in August and baby is due on May 3rd.  I love that date since my grandma’s birthday is May 2nd and my mom’s birthday is May 4th, so it is right inbetween 2 of my favorite women.  However, Jacob was 12 days early, so I am pretty confident this baby will be coming sometime in the end of April.  Who knows…my birthday is 13 days before May 3rd, we could share a birthday, or Justin’s dad’s birthday is April 29th. Anybody want to make any bets??

So far this pregnancy has been really different than last time.  When I was pregnant with Jacob I had very little nausea and it only lasted for a week.  The only “problem” I had was the extreme exhaustion during the first trimester.  Other than that, my pregnancy was a breeze and I loved every minute of it.  This time around I spent the entire first trimester battling some pretty bad nausea ontop of the exhaustion (and throw in the added job of taking care of an almost 2 year old).  I spent many days laying on the floor in Jacob’s room half asleep pointing out toys for him to play with.  I also got sick with a cold twice during that time which was not fun…It was a rough first trimester, but I have turned a corner, the nausea is gone and I am feeling more energized.  My appetite is back which is good since I lost 3 pounds during my first trimester.  Because this pregnancy is so different Justin was convinced we were having a girl.  I didn’t have any strong feeling either way and would be happy with either a girl or a boy.  A few weeks ago we had an ultrasound which brings me to the second half of this announcement…that we are having another BOY!!  I am really excited about that, I love the idea of two brothers running around playing together and terrorizing everything in their path.  I think deep down I was secretly hoping it was going to be another boy.  Somebody remind me of that one day when I am frustrated with the constant messes they make and all their rambunctiousness!

I am having problems with my scanner communicating with my computer, it is a problem I’ve had for quite a while now, and somehow fixing it never makes it to the top of my priority to do list.  So instead of a nice scanned ultrasound picture, I have for you a picture of a picture. He was very active during this ultrasound and kept jumping on my bladder which was fun after drinking the required 24oz of water before the ultrasound.

IMG_2931

Another big difference with this pregnancy is remembering that I am pregnant.  I am so busy with Jacob and everything else in life that I often times forget.  I know what is coming and I know why my body is doing the things it’s doing, but the full reality of it has not hit me and it may not, until I am holding my sweet boy in my arms.  One day I will get the full story on our journey through the second baby project posted.  In the meantime here’s my 16 week belly.

Scooby Doo

We’ve always loved celebrating all the different holidays throughout the year. However, there are some holidays that are so much better when kids are involved.  Seeing their excitement and anticipation through their eyes makes all the effort so worth it.  This year Jacob was old enough to participate in the Halloween festivities!  First up was carving a pumpkin.  He knew exactly what a pumpkin was since we have been to so many pumpkin patches and he sees them every time we go into the grocery store, so he wasn’t fazed when we actually bought one instead of passing by them.

Since Jacob has a passion for dogs, we thought Scooby Doo would be a fun costume for him.  I was a bit nervous that he wouldn’t wear it because he still doesn’t like things on his head, but he has been getting better about wearing hats so I had hope.  When we got the costume I hung it up in his room and every single day he would look at it and say Doggie!! He got very familiar with it so that evening when it started getting dark we put his costume on and lit up the pumpkin. And if you think he looks like a chipmunk instead of Scooby Doo…it’s the cookies we were using to bribe him to stay still for the camera.

Two days before Halloween the shopping center by our house put on a Halloween festival and we went down there to trick or treat through all the stores.  They had a live band playing and we enjoyed the music and watched all the kids running around everywhere.  On Halloween I took Jacob to my old office to see everyone’s costumes and then we went to Justin’s office for a Halloween potluck lunch.  Our friends had a Halloween party that we went to on Saturday night, there is where Scooby Doo found his friends Shaggy and Daphne.

Horsin’ Around

Every year when we go to Oregon, we always spend one afternoon setting up some props for a fun little photo shoot.  You can see what we’ve done in the past (2012, 2013).  This year was no different, although it was more challenging to get an almost 2 year old to sit still and smile for the camera.  But we did it!  IMG_0264ed IMG_0260ed IMG_0270ed IMG_0282edIMG_0296ed IMG_0295edThen the boys saddled up the horses to move the neighbors cow back into the neighbors field and we spent the rest of the afternoon horsin’ around the ranch. Justin and my mom gave Jake his first horse ride on my mom’s horse, Checkers.  I would love to say that this next batch of pictures is because I think our son is just adorable (which I do)…but in reality they are just pure comedy because Checkers can’t take a decent photo to save his life, you’ll see what I mean. This first one is actually one of the best pictures I’ve seen of Checkers, he looks like a model horse.

IMG_0312ed

But then he does this…IMG_0311edIMG_0314ed IMG_0316ed IMG_0323edThen we get another decent one…

IMG_0318edLike I said in the first Oregon post, Jake loves his cowboy boots and wore them all day, everyday, even while waiting for his bath to be drawn and saying goodnight to the cows out in the fields.

It was another fun trip!  On the way home we had a 30 minute layover in LAX and our flight was late leaving Eugene, so we missed our connecting flight, by just minutes…which turned an easy 30 minute layover into a 2 hour layover to get the next flight.  But our little guy is such a great traveler and I’ve learned that an easy way to distract him are lots and lots and lots of stickers.

Tractors and Lone Pine Farms

Once Jake was introduced to all the animals on the ranch he didn’t really seem to care too much about them.  His main focus was the tractors!  My dad has 3 good sized tractors and from the time Jake woke up in the morning until he went to bed at night, all he wanted to do was drive the tractors.  In fact, if my dad would go outside to start the morning chores before or while I was feeding Jake breakfast, he would refuse to eat because all he wanted to do was go outside with grandpa and ride those tractors.

IMG_0010ed IMG_0074ed

When they would go on their rides, grandpa taught him which lever made the bucket in front of the tractor go up and down, so he knew exactly what he was doing.

And when he was on the smaller tractor he would point to the other tractor

And any mention of the tractors, leads to them being in or near the barn which always leads to the cat who lives in the barn. That was the one animal that Jake had an interest in. Here he saw the cat and started signing cat.

I think grandpa is going to have a ranch hand who is very eager to drive the tractors pretty soon.

IMG_2487 IMG_0240edOne day we went to Lone Pine farms which is a really nice farmers market and they had a pumpkin patch set up with fun activities for the kids to do.  We did some shopping and played among the carts of pumpkins they had out front.

Later that day back at the ranch, my mom got out the bag of train tracks that my grandma had for my brother and I to play with when we were younger and then my nephews played with them and now Jake is having his turn.

IMG_0225ed IMG_0234I have one more to go before I wrap up this trip!

Oregon 2014

We planned our yearly trip up to visit my parents in Oregon a little bit later this year.  It is usually pretty warm when we go in the summer and since we have had such a hot summer in San Diego, I was longing for some cooler fall weather, so we planned our trip for the end of September through the first week of October.  Justin already had a business meeting planed in North Carolina for a couple of days, so we were able to arrange flights leaving within 50 minutes of each other on the same day to avoid multiple trips to the airport.  Justin left for North Carolina and Jake and I flew to Oregon.  Jake did great on the trip, when our 1 hour layover turned into a 3 hour layover at LAX I was a bit worried that I didn’t have enough stuff with me to entertain him for that long in one place, plus all the air travel time.  But it seemed to go by really fast and he provided lots of entertainment for the frustrated and weary travelers at our gate.  By the time we got to my parents house it was dinner time, then bath and to bed.  The next day is when the fun began!  And I will warn you in advance this trip is going to span over a few posts heavy with pictures…

First up on the agenda was feeding the cows.

IMG_2451ed

IMG_9927ed IMG_9930ed IMG_9939ed IMG_9945edAnd while seeing real live cows that close was fun and all…Jake was much more interested in driving the Kubota around.  So Grandpa let him drive all over the ranch, and he was one happy boy!

After all the morning chores were done, we had lunch and a nap before heading into town to find Jake a pair of real cowboy boots.  Our shopping trip was a success and he loves his new boots and wore them every single day we were there.

The next day my mom and I took Jake to the Children’s Science Museum in Eugene.  They had lots of hands on things for kids to do.  Jake was immediately drawn to the floating boats in the water.

Then he found this contraption that had a powerful suction that pulled these balls into the tubes and spit them out at another station at the other side of the room.  At first we couldn’t figure out where the balls were going, but once we did, I sat at the other station for a bit and Jake and I sent balls back and forth to each other.

It was a fun place to go and let him run around and play.  Late that evening after Jake went to bed, Justin flew in from his meeting in North Carolina.  The next morning he was happy to see his daddy!  That day my parents invited some of their friends over to practice cow sorting.  This was something new to us, but apparently it is a pretty big sport among some parts of the country.  Basically, there are two round pens set up side by side with an opening between them.  There are 10 cows in one pen that have numbers on them and two people on horses.  A number is called out and one person/horse is guarding the opening while the other person/horse is trying to get the cow with that number away from the others and into the other pen without letting any other cows in as well. It is actually pretty entertaining to watch.  First everyone saddled up the horses and rode around to warm them up.  Jake didn’t like being on this side of the fence, he wanted to join the big boys.

IMG_2473ed

After the cows were rounded up in the pen the games started.

IMG_0054ed IMG_0051ed IMG_0050ed IMG_0061edWe wrapped up the day with dinner at the Dexter Lake Club.  Jake was really loving all the new sights, sounds and things to play with.  He quickly learned how to pick up the grain bowls from the horse stalls and where to put them.  As you saw from the picture above, he loved pushing the broom around the barn and fell in love with the barn cat! I have lots and lots more to share so I’ll be back soon.

This past Labor Day, we didn’t really have any big plans and wanted to avoid the crowds at the obvious locations like the beach, Sea World, zoo, etc… so we decided to play tourist again and check out another San Diego attraction that we had not yet been to.  A while back there was a documentary on the Point Loma lighthouse on TV and we caught maybe the last 3 minutes of it and decided that would be our next destination.

When we arrived, we looked around the visitors center and ended up on the back patio that has gorgeous views of the San Diego skyline.  Unfortunately, we were there in the morning and the marine layer had not cleared out yet, if you squint and look really closely, you can see some of the downtown buildings and the Coronado Bridge in the background.

Then we walked up the hill to the lighthouse

When we got to the top, we looked around the little museum that explained the history and how the lighthouse works.

Jacob’s favorite part was the buttons you can push to turn the lights off and on, we could have left him there for hours…

Inside the lighthouse there was a (narrow) staircase to climb to get to the top.

We walked around taking in the amazing views, we saw some pretty buildings down below that we later found out belong to the Coast Guard, not sure if it is some kind of living quarters for the VIPs, it looks like a vacation retreat if you ask me!

Just to the right of the above picture were some tide pools.  When Jacob is older we will be coming back here to explore those!

When driving to/from the lighthouse you drive through Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery.  On our way in, I told Justin we would be stopping on our way out so I could take some pictures.  It is a beautiful way to remember those who have fought for our country, and the the views are just breathtaking.

This is really high up on our list of favorite places to visit in San Diego!

A visit from Grandma

Last month my mom came to visit for a while and man it was nice having her here!  It was nice having someone else (an adult) to talk to as we went about our day, it is amazing how much more I could get done with an extra set of hands to entertain Jake.  I was able to make appointments and we ran all kinds of errands and got stuff done!  And of course we were having fun along the way with plenty of trips to the park, shopping and lots of giggles.

One afternoon we went to the Del Mar Races.  First we stopped at the paddock to watch the horses saddle up and parade around before heading out to the race track.

Then we went to the infield to watch the races so Jacob would have room to run around.  Justin got some drinks for us and my mom let Jacob have a taste of her lemonade.

And that was it…she hardly even got any, Jacob wouldn’t give it back and drank the whole thing.

When it got close to being empty I added some water to the cup hoping he would drink it and he wanted nothing to do with it. Pure lemonade only for this little boy!  We lost a few bucks and won a few bucks, it was a fun afternoon.

On another day we drove to Oma’s house for a visit. After Jacob got Oma comfortable in her recliner by pushing all the buttons to lift her up and down and lean her back and forth he discovered all the fun things she has to climb and ride around on.

After Oma took this for a spin around the hall he decided it was his turn and kept making his vroom, vroom noises

Oma…what does this button do?

After we had In N Out for lunch (yum!) we went outside to run around for a bit before we headed home.  Jacob found some pretty flowers

and decided that Oma should have them.

Just a few days after we visited Oma, we were walking up the stairs and at the top of the stairs I have a picture of Jacob on Oma’s lap during Christmas hanging on the wall and he started signing Oma!  It is so awesome to see him recognize faces and learn who people are and be able to sign who they are.  When it came time for my mom to go home, Jacob walked around signing grandma, grandma, grandma everywhere he went for a few days.  He still signs grandma wash whenever he goes into the guest bathroom.  I just love seeing the wheels turn in his head!

It was a fun time with grandma and we look forward to next time!
