Just some favorites

With the craziness of the holidays, travels, Jacob’s birthday and the fact that he is only napping once a day now, my time to sort through pictures and blog them is even more limited than before.  I am still taking lots of pictures but it takes a while before they are downloaded from my camera, let alone posted here.  So I am playing a little bit of catch up…The few months before the holidays I was pretty busy in my little photography world since it was the season to get pictures done for Christmas Cards, there were also babies being born and birthdays to celebrate.  Rather than doing a post for each photo shoot I did, I am just going to share a few of my favorites.

First up was my one of my favorite families, The White family.

IMG_2675edWe went to the Los Peñasquitos Ranch House.  I really like this location for the old buildings and nature setting.  If you go at the right time of day the sun coming through the trees is magical.  Little girls playing in the background of the photo is pretty magical too!

IMG_2797ed

IMG_2932wbedI also did the Wisbach family at the same location.

These kids were so much fun to work with

IMG_4327edI was impressed with how willing they were to have their pictures taken and how well they listened to their parents

IMG_4355edGood job mom and dad!

IMG_4418edThen it was on to the Ford Family to capture their sweet Kennedy’s first birthday.

IMG_3279edThey live on the bay so we walked down to their backyard onto the sand for pictures

IMG_3338ed

Kennedy was one of those early walkers, so she was a pro at the walking thing at the time of this photo shoot and that was all she wanted to do.  I remember being sore the next day from chasing her around!

IMG_3415edIMG_3538ed

And my cousin added a second sweet little girl to her family

IMG_4775ed IMG_4947bw

I love the time I get to spend with friends, family and even people I don’t know that well during these photo shoots.  I know I still have a lot to learn, especially in the editing process, but the more practice I get the more I learn about my hobby. I am thankful for all my friends and family who let me practice on them and refer me to people who are looking for a someone to take pictures for them.  Sometimes after looking at the pictures I took, I am disappointed that they didn’t come out as good as I hoped, sometimes I am surprised at a shot that I got and other times, I am so excited to share them with my client because I know they will love them as much as I do. Truly what it comes down to for why I love taking pictures is capturing memories.

“Time will never stand still and those moments that bring us such joy become memories in an instant. To capture such a moment and record it forever is truly monumental.”

The Party

When trying to decide what to do for Jacob’s first birthday party, we kept going back and forth on where to have it.  There are so many great parks in our neighborhood but it being January we didn’t want to take our chances just in case the San Diego winter weather decided to drop below 65 and actually produce some rain. And our house just is not big enough to host all the people we invited.  So I asked my Aunt and Uncle who live in Oceanside if we could have the party at their house. They said yes, with the location secured, the party planning mode was in full force.

We decided to go with an Olympic theme since the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia were starting just a few weeks later (actually I am watching the Olympics as I work on this post).  We ordered gold medals and temporary tattoos of the Olympic rings.  I went on Pinterest to get ideas for decor and made some Olympic torches out of candle sticks and tissue paper.  I have some friends who are creating a business of putting together packages of paper decorative items for parties, they made us some Team USA signs and Olympic themed cupcake toppers.IMG_5938edWe got cupcakes in the colors of the Olympic rings and I had every intention of arranging them in circles like the actual Olympic rings to be served.  But the moment was kind of crazy and that didn’t happen, but hey at least they tasted good!

IMG_5945edAnother idea that I found on Pinterest was a chalkboard that lists things about your child that you could purchase from a company who would personalize it for you.  We have a few chalkboards in our house that we write sayings, verses, draw pictures, etc… on so we already had some colorful chalkboard paint markers and I found a big chalkboard at Marshalls all we had to do was get our creative juices flowing and make our own.  It was two nights before the party and it took Justin, me and my mom 2.5 hours to do this with three differences in opinions (and all 3 of us are perfectionists) and two bottles of wine!  It was definitely one of those nights that I will never forget.  We were excited, frustrated and laughing the entire time.  In the end I am pretty impressed with how it came out!

A little over 60 people filled my Aunt and Uncle’s yard.  Of course it was a gorgeous San Diego day and we are so blessed to have have so many wonderful friends and family to celebrate Jacob with us. I am thankful that my mom took on the task of taking pictures, I was so busy visiting and if she hadn’t done that then I would have maybe 3 pictures of the whole day.

Thank you to all those who celebrated with us!  We missed those who could not come and Jacob is so lucky to have such wonderful people in his life.  Happy Birthday to my sweet boy!

Fulfilled promise

My mom is still very close with her best friend growing up.  I have lots of fun memories when I was young of all the time our families spent together over the years.  The youngest of Lynn’s 4 children got married at the beginning of November so we drove to Bakersfield for the happy occasion.  Papa J and Nonnie came with us and had a great time babysitting Jacob at the hotel, while we went to the wedding with my parents, so it was a bit of a date night for us.

WeddingED

It was an absolutely beautiful wedding!  You can see pictures of it here and here.  The next day we all went to Lynn’s house for brunch and visited for a while, afterwards, we got back on the road again and drove to Paso Robles.  It had been three years since we were last in Paso Robles celebrating my 30th birthday and I’ve been wanting to go back. There was a time when Jacob was not taking the bottle…I was getting frustrated and discouraged, and to keep me motivated to continue to work with Jacob to take a bottle, Justin made a promise that we would go back to Paso and go wine tasting once he did. So this trip was a bit of a late celebration for us!  We visited our favorite places and discovered some new ones as well.  Jacob was a good sport and enjoyed crawling all over the tasting room floors.

IMG_3672edJustin decided that Jacob needed a little facial hair to match his daddy.

IMG_3698edJacob was napping while we were tasting at J. Dusi, when he woke up we went outside to take in the pretty scenery and play around before heading off to the next winery.

This little cart reminded us of all the ones we saw during our trip to Tuscany.

There was a giant oak tree which made for a fun backdrop

IMG_3791ed IMG_3799edAfter a couple of days, my parents left to go home to get started on their kitchen remodel and we stayed one more day.  We choose a road on the map that we have never been down before and stopped to visit the wineries in the area.  Not only does Paso Robles have some fantastic wines but the country is beautiful!  It is a must to visit a place up on a hill to take in the view.

IMG_3809edA beautiful wedding, fantastic wine and fun times with family made for a wonderful trip and  a fulfilled promise

Pink

We have everything blue and boy in this house, my husband, my son and the dog have me outnumbered.  So when I get a chance to take pictures of girls I love the fun colors and textures of girly clothes. My friend, Dana, got this adorable pink little number for her little Aubrey at her baby shower.

IMG_1634ed

IMG_1639ed

Aubrey let me get a few pictures of her in sleepy mode, but then she was intrigued by the clicking sound my camera makes and was wide awake for the rest of our session.

IMG_1690edBig brother AJ was curious about all the girly fuss we were making and came over to check it out

IMG_1632edI just love that cute face!  We then convinced him to join in with his little sister

Anticipating Aubrey

One of my girlfriends asked me to take some maternity pictures of her during her second pregnancy.  I did the same thing 3 years ago when she was pregnant with her son, before I got my “nice” camera and I was just starting to toy around with the idea of learning more about photography.

Now, Dana is pregnant with a little girl, Aubrey (actually she had Aubrey a little over a month ago, I’m a bit behind on photos!)  She chose the Midland Railroad Park in Poway as the location.  This is one of my favorite places because of the rustic backdrop.

IMG_9950edPretty momma!IMG_9946edEvery time I get together with Dana and her son, he is so excited to tell me that baby Aubrey is in mommy’s belly.

I just know he is going to be a great big brother!

IMG_0026ed IMG_0109edWhile we were taking pictures we noticed a sign at the park across the street that was named Aubrey Park, it was meant to be!

2nd Anniversary

I know, I know, I am on a blogging roll!  Lots to share!

Last Sunday our church celebrated our 2nd anniversary with another chili cook off!  We had a wonderful guest speaker during the service and celebrated afterwards in the park.  We invited our local fire department to come participate and the kids loved getting to explore the fire truck.  Julia and I wanted to recreate the picture we took last year on the back of the truck with our pregnant bellies, unfortunately, they had the truck backed up into the edge of the parking lot and there was a tree obstructing the back.  But we made it work anyway and got some cute shots with the kiddos.

IMG_1894ed

IMG_1900edOne of the firemen we were talking to even noticed that Jacob had a big fire truck on his shirt 🙂

IMG_1905edWe thanked the firemen for serving our community and let them dive into the chili

IMG_1919edIMG_1924edAfter lunch we spread out a blanket and let the kiddos play

IMG_1907edKJ and Jacob were passing a toy back and forth “taking turns” playing/chewing on it

IMG_1911edIMG_1915edIMG_1917edOur blanket quickly filled up with friends and even our buddy Micah joined us

Playdate

On Labor Day “the 3 of us who became 6” got together for a play date (we let the daddies join in on the fun too).  The first to arrive was Sammie, they got busy playing.

IMG_1774edThen KJ showed up and joined in on the fun!

IMG_1775edIt is going to be great to watch the 3 of them grow up and play together over the years.

IMG_1783edI am so thankful for these kiddos (and their mommies & daddies too)!

The Hardy Boys

No I am not talking about the books…To me the Hardy boys are living, breathing and very active little boys.  My sweet friend Angelina is married to the oldest Hardy boy, and she is the mom of 3 younger Hardy boys.  You may remember the pictures I took of them last year. Since I took those pictures, they added a 3rd boy to their family.

Angelina has pictures of her two older boys in the same pose snuggling a teddy bear when they were 6 weeks old.  A while back she asked me if I would take the same picture of her youngest when he was 6 weeks old.  So we set a date and had a fun little photo shoot.

IMG_9372cOf course we couldn’t do just one measly photo, so this turned into a bit of a family session!  When we arrived, the boys had just gotten out of school and they were full of e.n.e.r.g.y.  They asked me to take pictures of them doing karate moves while bouncing around the couch.

IMG_9313ed

Once baby brother was ready for his closeup, they stopped jumping around to give him some kisses. IMG_9332edBrotherly love IMG_9409edIMG_9419edWhen attempting to get a family photo, it is a bit tricky to get more than one child to look at the camera, keep their eyes open AND smile.  So I’ve found that if I play around with them a bit and ask them to give me a silly face, then an excited pose, scary face, or serious, etc…then ask them to smile I usually end up with a decent one.  Plus it makes for some fun goofy photos too!

This one is my absolute favorite one, I just told them to give me their excited faces! IMG_9464edThen a good old fashioned happy smile 🙂 IMG_9439edI had SO much fun with these pictures, I was laughing out loud while working on them getting ready to give to Angelina, the boys were being so silly.  I kept thinking about Jacob and what he will be like when he grows up.  One thing for sure you can count on me to be ready with a camera when he is doing karate moves on the couch.  Check back in a few years for those.

Angelina is such an inspiration being an amazing woman, teacher, mother (and the only female!) in the midst of the chaos of the Hardy boys.  I am so glad we are friends and that they added the third boy to their family.  Now Jacob has a boy close to his age to run around with (we are surrounded by baby girls at the moment) and I just know they are going to be best buddies!

Surf’s up

A couple of weekends ago we planned to meet Justin’s parents and grandma in Oceanside to celebrate grandma’s 89th birthday.  Unfortunately she got sick and couldn’t make it 🙁  They also had a family friend, Peyton, in town visiting who we wanted to see, so we still got together.  It was a beautiful San Diego day and we had lunch overlooking the Oceanside Pier.  When we arrived there were SO many people out and about, more than your typical Saturday afternoon, so we knew something was going on.  Turns out, it was a female surfing competition.  Apparently it was a pretty big deal and competitors from all over the world came to participate.  So after lunch we walked out to the pier to watch.  All the people lined up at the bottom of the picture were waiting for the next surfer to walk out to the water.

IMG_1288edTurns out that the surfer was Bethany Hamilton, who became famous a while back after she lost her arm to a shark and returned to professional surfing. In fact I am pretty sure they made a movie about her?

IMG_1291edSomething new I learned that day was that the surfers make their way out to the water by going out under the pier so they don’t have to fight the waves (obviously I don’t know that much about surfing).  If you look closely you can see her swimming out from underneath the pier.

IMG_1275edWe didn’t stick around all day so I have no idea how the competition ended, but it was fun to watch for a little while.

Weekend fun

We have been so busy every weekend this summer we haven’t had a free weekend to to relax and and say “what do you want to do today?”  Last weekend we finally had that.  We started it off having some friends over for dinner on Friday night.  Saturday we had a lazy morning at home, then that afternoon we went to the Powerhouse Park in Del Mar.  We simply just sat and watched the waves crashing, the seagulls flying and all the people swimming, lounging and walking by.

IMG_1468edIt was one of those days where all we could talk about was how lucky we are to live in such an amazing city.  We also have had such a mild summer, we did have a heat wave in June that lasted for about a week and a half, otherwise, it has been beautiful!  Saturday was no exception, it was an absolute perfect afternoon. Jacob enjoyed the new sights and watching and hearing the train go by was pretty fascinating for him.

IMG_1449ed

And if you think all Jacob does is smile, well you are right, pretty much 85% of the time he is one happy little dude, 5% of the time he is fussy because he is tired, or he is demanding our attention or he doesn’t want to eat whatever new food I am trying to feed him (another post on food will be coming soon), and the other 10% of the time he is ferociously chewing and gnawing on anything he can get his hands on.  In this case, a giraffe was his victim.

IMG_1443ed

On Sunday after church we went to the pool with our neighbors who have a 10 month old girl, who just recently started walking!! Note, Jacob is chewing again…
