Halloween

I know it has been a while since I’ve posted anything and I guess I don’t really have any major news to share.  So I’ll tell you all about our Halloween!  We celebrated lots of different ways.  First, was the Saturday before Halloween, we went to a costume party at a friends house.  The hostesses birthday is on Halloween, so this is obviously her favorite holiday and she pulls out all the stops when it comes to decorating, food, drinks and of course candy.  We were so busy the month before we didn’t really have time to put much thought or effort into a cool costume.  So, Justin decided to go as James Bond in honor of the new Skyfall movie coming out, but he said he was the Sean Connery James Bond not Daniel Craig.  He put on his tuxedo that he got his freshman year of college (it was pretty impressive that he still fit into it, or maybe he finally grew into it 🙂 ) He bought a bow tie and completed the look with a Martini Glass.  He tried to convince me to go as a Bond girl.  I told him they have yet to cast a pregnant woman as a Bond girl and I was not going to put on a skimpy outfit with 4 inch heels and my belly hanging out, sorry.  So I went the easy route and ordered a pregnancy Halloween shirt.  I did take my camera to the party but did not really feel like taking pictures, so all I have is this iPhone shot of the 3 preggos at the party.
On the actual day of Halloween we both went to work.  Our work environments are so different when it comes to this holiday.  At Justin’s office no one dresses up or even does anything to celebrate the occasion.  My office however…well let’s put it this way, we have a lot of kids for patients so it’s really fun for them to come to their doctors office and everyone is dressed up.  But in reality, the doctors I work for are just big kids at heart and love to dress up, sing, dance and do anything that involves large amounts of fun and Halloween is just one of the ways they can do that.  It makes for a fun day at the office!  My co-workers bring in their kids and grandkids so we can all ohhh and ahhh over their costumes as they trick or treat from office to office.  All of us girls in the research department tend to do group theme costumes.  One year we were all Disney Princesses, one year we were doing a cat study so everyone dressed up as a cat.  This year we were scrabble (or Words with Friends) tiles.  We spelled out many little words, but altogether we were AWESOME!
Here’s our group
My shirt was a hit
When we first bought our house and Halloween came around I got a Costco sized bag of candy, carved some pumpkins, put some scary movies on TV and I was ready for the trick and treaters.  We didn’t get a single one. Not.a.single.one. I was so bummed!  I asked around my neighbors who had lived here for a while and they said that the kids go to the shopping centers or to the bigger houses for the candy.  So I learned my lesson.  Since then we’ve always gone to friends houses who live in trick or treating neighborhoods for the evening.  This year was especially fun, because I was thinking that this time next year I was going to have a 9 month old.  He wont be walking yet, but I’m sure he’ll be crawling and I get to dress him up and parade him around, I can’t wait!

Hope your Halloween was fun!

Flying Colors

On Tuesday I had my glucose screening test.  It is a standard test that every woman has to do at the start of their 3rd trimester to test for gestational diabetes.  I was not supposed to eat or drink anything really sweet for 2 hours before the test, so I figured I would do it first thing in the AM to ensure that nothing I ate or drank would throw off the results.  Upon arriving in the lab they gave me a 10 oz bottle of Limeondex, it is a clear sugary drink, and told me I had 5 minutes to drink it.  So with one eye on the clock, I got started, it actually did not taste that bad.  Apparently the lab tech thought I was taking too long and started asking me every 30 seconds after 2 minutes if I was done.  Tired of her questions, I ended up finishing it in a hurry (at 3 minutes and 15 seconds to be exact) sheesh, what happened to 5 minutes?? Then I was told not to eat or drink anything and I had to stay in the lab for 1 hour.  So I go in the back corner of the waiting room and get comfortable.  I had a bag of magazines, a book and my laptop.  The hour flew by pretty quickly and when it was up they called me back to draw my blood and I was on my way.  The Limeondex really was not that hard to get down, but it did leave a nasty aftertaste and I felt kind of gross for the rest of the morning, once I had lunch I felt better.  The next day I called my doctors office for the results and the nurses words were “Congratulations you passed with flying colors!” Whew, glad that part is over.
Next up was an ultrasound!  Yesterday I had to repeat the drink 32 oz of water an hour before and hold it (at least this time I didn’t have a lab tech hounding me every 30 seconds).  At first it is not too bad, but then as I am sitting in the waiting room waiting to be called back it hits me and it is so uncomfortable.  Then when they do call you back they start pushing the ultrasound probe thingy down on your full bladder, who makes up these rules?  Anyway, it is all worth it.  We got to see our little boy!  He  was laying on his side and moving his lips and sticking his tongue in and out.  It was so crazy to see how big he has gotten since our last ultrasound.  I have been able to physically feel how much he is growing since his movements, kicks and punches are getting more and more powerful, and my belly will randomly shift and bulge out, but to see him was a different story. I have to wait until my next doctors appointment in 2 weeks to find out the status of my placenta, so I’ll get back to you on that.

So without further adieu, here’s his profile.  Who do you think he looks like, mom or dad?
On a side note…this ultrasound is making me think about a fundraiser Justin and I went to last night for Turning Point.  Turning Point is a pregnancy resource center that is located here in San Diego.  Their goal is to prevent abortions and provide information, free pregnancy tests, counseling, support and resources to those women who are planning to have an abortion due to an unintended pregnancy.  There are many reasons why women decide to have an abortion, some of them being the fear of parenting alone, not being able to afford it, unsure of how they will finish school or work with a child, no insurance or simply being too young.  Turning point will offer information on how they can make life work and get around these fears with a child and provide them with information about adoption if they feel that they simply can not raise their child.  They also provide counseling to women who are living with the regret of having an abortion.  This is a wonderful organization and it was so amazing to listen to the speakers sharing stories of what Turning Point has accomplished, there were real clients there with their babies and a video of moms talking about how grateful they were to Turning Point for helping them to make a real educated decision to keep their child and you could see the love and joy in their eyes as they held their squirming baby in their arms.  One amazing accomplishment that Turning Point has done is their mobile ultrasound vehicle.  They have a large RV that has been outfitted with an ultrasound machine and a place to meet and counsel with women.  88% of women decide to keep their baby after seeing them on the ultrasound screen.  That is huge!  Just that fact alone, seeing your child on the screen creates an immediate bond and there is no way anyone can deny that is a real life growing inside you.  This ultrasound vehicle is such a huge step forward in preventing abortions.

We were at this fundraiser just a few hours after my ultrasound appointment so these emotions were very close to my heart.  I have never been in a situation where I was considering an abortion, but the exact opposite.  I remember thinking over the past few years, how can all these women be having abortions when there are so many other women who are struggling to get pregnant.  There’s always two sides to a story or two extremes in opposite directions.  Through this process I’ve learned that you can’t really say what you would do in a certain situation until you are in the middle of that situation.  There was a time when I thought there was no way I would do IVF, but I did.  There are so many women out there who plan to have an abortion but once they get a little love, support and see their baby with an ultrasound, make the decision to choose life. I am so thankful for this organization, they have a beautiful thing going on here.

Projects

My dad is a pretty handy guy to have around, he is the kind of guy that can fix, build or make anything related a house, restoring/maintaining a car, boat, houseboat, RV and pretty much anything else.  Growing up our garage was like a mini Home Depot and my parents are the kind of people who will take on these projects themselves rather than hiring someone to do it for them.   I remember spending hours in the garage with my dad while he taught me how to change the oil in my car and we spent countless hours washing our cars, RV, boats and if I didn’t do something right or good enough he would make me do it again, and again until it was done correctly.  Of course I hated him for that at the time, but now I get it…  When I went off to college my dad sent along with me a tool bag complete with a power drill.  So those habits rubbed off on me.  Justin worked construction for a few summers and is pretty handy himself and likes to do things with his hands.  He also was hired by his parents friends as a kid to wash & detail their cars and he spent many hours working at his parents salon.  So we both were raised to be do it “yourselfers” and are always looking for the next project to do.

I have been wanting new carpet for a long time, pretty much since we bought our place.  We’ve done so many other projects around our house but the carpet never got replaced.  We decided that we would get new carpet when I got pregnant before the baby came…little did we know that would take 3 years…but the time is here and we started carpet shopping/research.  These house projects are dangerous because one thing always leads to another and we end up doing 7 projects when we intended to do one.  When we had the carpet guy over to give us a quote and measure out the square footage we mentioned that we didn’t necessarily need carpet in our vanity area of our bathroom because we were planning to put tile there.  Of course he suggested getting that done before the carpet was installed so we wouldn’t get the new carpet dirty, which lead to other things we wanted to get done before the carpet was installed, like moving electrical into the hallway, cleaning out the guest bedroom & closets, painting the nursery, etc…So the new carpet set off the domino effect of projects to get done.  Anyone who has done these kind of things knows that these projects ALWAYS take longer than expected.

First up was electrical…Our 2nd bedroom served as a guest room, storage place and office.  Since we got rid of pretty much everything in that room and closets so it could serve as a nursery, we needed to create some sort of office area for our computer, printer, etc… So we ripped out a built in cabinet that was in our hallway and put in a counter and added a smaller cabinet for office supplies and to house our printer/scanner, voila instant office!  the only problem was there was no electrical to plug everything in.  So we had an electrician come out and move some electrical into the office area and install the fixings in the ceiling of the nursery so we could hang a fan.  Done!

Next up was tile…as I mentioned the vanity area of our bathroom was carpeted, ewww, I know.  And the tile that was in the shower/toilet part of the bathroom was this really annoying rock tile that was impossible to keep clean.  Funny, because I remember the flier when we were buying our house and that was a selling point, “New Rock Tile in Bathrooms!!” I couldn’t wait to rip it up.  At first we planned to rip out the shower and replace that as well, but since there was some tricky plumbing involved we didn’t feel comfortable doing it all without the help of a professional.  We got some quotes from 3 different contractors and it was going to end up being a $5,000-6,000 project.  So we decided to leave the shower alone and just redo the floors.  We (Justin) ripped up the rock tile and carpet and thanks to my dad for letting us borrow his tile saw (from his mini Home Depot garage) we installed nice clean 12×24 subway tiles.  It made a world of difference!  Justin did most of the work on this project, I was his assistant handing him what he needed (including a beer here and there, we were having a heat wave!) and holding tile during some tricky cuts in the saw. Halfway through the project I told him I was feeling kind of guilty that I couldn’t help him with a lot of the heavy labor stuff, he smiled and said “That’s okay, you can repay me in a few months when you go into labor.”  Yep, that’s the kind of man I married 🙂  Done!

Then there was paint…Justin and I have pretty much painted our entire house literally from top to bottom.  Now being pregnant, I wasn’t too comfortable with being exposed to paint fumes for a long period of time, so Justin’s parents offered to come help and the three of them painted the nursery walls and hung a new fan while I cleaned out more stuff around the house. Done!

Finally, carpet…This was the one thing that didn’t require any work on our part, except it did.  We removed all the baseboards in our bedroom.  We had to pack up and move all the small things and everything that was at the bottom of our closets downstairs.  By now the nursery was empty so after carpeting that room, all the furniture in our bedroom was moved in there.  After the carpet was all in, we had to move everything back.  But it was SO worth it!  Done!

Start the nursery…After many trips to Babies R Us, Buy Buy Baby, online research and reading Baby Bargains we finally made a choice on a crib and dressers.  The main reason why we choose the one we did was because of the height of the dressers, all the ones we looked at were so short, since one dresser will also serve as a changing table I kept picturing us tall people bending over changing thousands of diapers and it made my back ache just thinking about it.  We came across a set that was much “taller” than the rest and I was excited to find a tall person’s dresser.  If you didn’t already know most baby furniture takes 8-13 weeks to be delivered, of course that was the case with the set we decided on.  With the crib, I didn’t mind waiting that long since the baby would be in our room for the first few months anyway, but I needed the dressers so I would have a place to put all the clothes and everything else we will be getting in the months to come.  So after some phone calls to Buy Buy Baby we were told that they had all 3 pieces in stock (yay!) so we didn’t have to wait 8-13 weeks, but we also needed to buy it right away before someone else did.  There was a hold on one dresser, so we waited a few days and they called and said that the other people didn’t want the dresser so all 3 pieces were ours and they would put our name on them and hold them for us for a week.  So we go to Buy Buy Baby the next day to confirm that they had everything and purchase it.  Like everything else, it was not an easy ordeal.  To make a long story short, they told us that they only had 1 dresser in stock, not the other dresser and they didn’t have the crib.  Of course we were frustrated since we were told on the phone that they had all 3 in stock and were on hold for us.  So after much back and forth looking in the back stock room and checking the inventory at another store a few hours away, we ended up with 3 people helping us including the manager.  After an hour and a half they “found” our crib in the back with our name on it so now we had a crib and one dresser.  So we negotiated buying the other dresser off the floor display since it was in good shape.  Justin was able to work out a deal and we had 20% off coupons for each item plus 10% off the dresser from the floor, we made arrangements to pick it up a few days later.  When we went to get the furniture, the dresser from the floor display was all packaged up in a box and at first we thought oh, how nice they packaged it up for us.  Then the manager came and told us that a new one came in sometime in the last few days and they gave us the new one (and we still had the 10% discount)!  So with a little help from some friends we now have furniture in the nursery. Done!

Making room for baby…I know the baby itself is just another person and will not take up that much space.  It’s everything that comes with the baby that I need to make room for!  We had an old bookshelf in the corner of our living room that I cleaned out and we got rid of, so now we have a good sized empty space.  We put up some shelves for the books and the space below is going to be for the swing and other baby toys, blankets, etc…I just need to get some baskets or some kind of dresser to house those things.

Other than some finishing touches to the nursery, the only other thing we need to get done is install new baseboards in our bedroom and bath. It has been a pretty fast-paced, hard-working few months, with countless trips to Goodwill, ACE Hardware, Home Depot and the dump, but now we are seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. From now until the end of the year we have lots of fun things planned like baby showers, birthday parties, holiday parties, so I am glad we got all this done when we did. And everything looks great!

Here’s Apollo supervising Justin working on the tile.

Bye Bye 2nd Trimester

I had my follow up appointment yesterday and everything looks good, my blood pressure is normal (pretty surprising after the last few weeks we’ve had!), weight gain is normal (this is the most I’ve ever weighed in my life, let’s hope it all goes away quickly after the baby is born!), she measured my belly and we listened to his heartbeat.  Every time she moved the Doppler to find his heartbeat he would start kicking and punching as if he were saying “get that thing away from me!”  All is well…The end of next week I officially start my third trimester (!) how did that happen?  So that means I am due for my glucose screening test to check for gestational diabetes.  I’ve heard two different opinions about the sugary drink that is required for this test, most people absolutely despise it, others say it’s really not that bad.  I’ll let you know what I think.  I also have an ultrasound scheduled (Yay!  More pictures of baby!) to check to see where my placenta is (please pray that I don’t have full placenta previa).  And finally my blood type is O- (the good stuff!) which means I am Rh- which means I get a RhoGam shot in 2 weeks.  So these next few weeks will be busy with all those appointments.  I’ll keep you posted…

Now that my 2nd trimester is coming to an end, I want to make note of a few things before I begin my 3rd trimester.

  • Overall I do feel really good!
  • Sleeping is hard, it’s not so much getting up to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night that bothers me, but it is the achiness of my back, hips and shoulders from sleeping on my side. And every time I roll over to change positions it is like wrestling with an alligator to reposition the 50 pillows around me and try not to kick the dog and wake up Justin in the process.  But it has helped me with getting up in the morning (I am typically not excited to get up in the AM) because it feels so much better to get up and move around.
  • I get tired a lot quicker now and we have lots of stairs in our house (30 steps from the garage to the top of the 2nd floor), and I am walking slower.
  • Bending over is not as easy as it used to be, I know that part is only going to get worse.  I went to Bed Bath and Beyond to get a step for the shower so I can put my leg up to shave.
  • I never had any crazy cravings, but am obsessed with fresh fruit and always have pineapple, watermelon, cantaloupe, grapes, apples, etc… handy to snack on.
  • Jamba Juice has been another craving of mine, very similar to the fresh fruit.  It is the one thing that saved me in my first trimester when I was battling the queasiness, and it is so refreshing during the hot summer days.
  • The one routine thing is I always have tangerines in bed before I go to sleep.  The dog sits at my side and very intensely stares at me while I am peeling and eating slice by slice of tangerines.
  • I giggle every time I need to get up off the couch because Justin has to pull me up.  I mean, I could do the side roll and push myself off (which is how I get out of bed) but it’s easier and more fun to let him pull me up. You should have seen us when we were shopping for recliner/rocking chairs, let’s just say Justin is getting his upper body workout pulling me up all the time.
  • I do have general aches and pains in my belly and back which is expected since everything is shifting, expanding and growing.
  • I have leg cramps all night long which also contributes to not sleeping well. I have pretty much resolved that I am not going to get a good nights sleep during the next 20 years or so, I am embracing it.
  • I miss my coffee.  And yes…I know coffee is fine to drink in moderation, my OB has told me that on more than one occasion.  But I had given up caffeine before we did IVF and I made the decision to keep that up until my 3rd trimester, I am waiting until the cooler fall weather to start drinking my coffee again. I admit I do have some of the first time pregnancy paranoia since we went though so much to get to this point, I don’t want to do anything that could potentially harm baby.

I know all this is going to intensify in the next few months, that is why I am running around like a madwoman right now to do as much as I can before that happens. I have had a pretty easy pregnancy so far and I am hoping that it stays that way. There are a lot of exciting things happening over the next few months with baby showers, holidays and getting the nursery ready!  It’s going to be fun!

Here’s my 26 week 5 day belly! XOXO

Chili Cook-Off

Last Sunday was the 1 year anniversary since our church “launched” to the public!  To celebrate the occasion we had a good old fashioned Chili Cook-Off.  Justin was able to let his creative juices flow and make the 1st and 2nd place trophies.
We had a great turnout, Pastor Jason did a fantastic job with his message, and we had 20 crock pots filled with different “top secret” types of chili.  After the service was over we all went out to the park to start tasting and the kids tackled the bounce house.
We asked the local fire department to be the judges, however, they got a call and were not able to come at that time.  That’s okay, we appreciate all the hard work they do (especially in this awful heat wave we’ve been having!) So new judges were appointed and they went right to work, tasting and taking notes on each one.
After the judges had their samples of each, we let the masses loose
Halfway through the fire department showed up!
They were happy to be a part of the cook off and dove right in tasting the chili.
After everyone had their taste of the goods the winner was announced!
Then the firemen invited all the kids to come tour their firetruck.  We technically do not have kids yet, but didn’t want to miss out on the fun, so here’s the babies to be on the truckNot to be outdone by the preggo’s the boys had their fun too 🙂
We are truly blessed to be a part of such an incredible church and love all the special friendships we’ve acquired there.  I can’t wait for our little boy to join in on the fun!

Praise the Lord.  Sing to the Lord a new song, his praise in the assembly of his faithful people. ~ Psalm 149:1

On the move

Whew!! What a day…lately I feel like our schedules are completely out of control! Work has been really busy for both of us, and everything else has gone into overdrive. Sometimes it is a fun kind of busy like our trip to Vegas, and the 4 fun events we crammed into 2 days this weekend and I wouldn’t change a thing.  But this is also a time when all I want to do is relax, read books and enjoy some peace and quiet before the baby comes and that is just not happening, so we’re hanging on and taking it one day (sometimes one hour) at a time.

Today’s perk was my doctors appointment.  All is well, my blood pressure and weight gain are right on track.  We heard his strong and healthy heartbeat again.  In fact, I think he has taken a clue from our crazy schedules since he is on the move himself.  My OB had to keep moving the doppler around to keep up with him.  It is amazing the peace it gives me just hearing his heartbeat and knowing that all is well.

During my walks with Apollo I try to use that time to “relax” mentally and not think about everything that needs to be done at work, home or in a certain timeframe. Most of the time it doesn’t work, sometimes it does and at least the exercise and fresh air gives me a clear head, energy boost or a second wind to keep going.

Here’s a picture I snapped with my iPhone of a pretty sky on one of our walks. Doesn’t looking at that give you a sense of calm! Work with me here…I’m trying!

Baby Bump Goes to Vegas!

Justin had a conference to go to in Las Vegas last week so we decided to make a trip out of it. We have some good friends who have a house out there and they let us “move in” for a few days. It was nice because we were able to enjoy the comforts of home that you can’t get in a hotel room, we were able to bring our dog with us and it was free! We broke up the drive by stopping to visit with my grandma and grandpa in Redlands. Grandpa and Justin picked up a pizza for lunch and we spent a few hours talking and telling stories. It is always so nice to see them! The rest of our drive went smoothly, we drove through a little rainstorm about 2 hours from Vegas.
When we adopted Apollo, I swear the paperwork that came with him got mixed up with another dogs paperwork because it said that he did not like riding in the car…I can assure you that is NOT true. There are times when we can’t get him out of the car when we get to our destination and end up leaving the door open so he can come inside when he realizes that the car ride is over.
When we arrived, we were greeted by our friends Davy & Deanna and we BBQed some steaks for dinner. The next morning after breakfast Davy & Deanna had to head back to San Diego and we spent the rest of the morning reading and relaxing. That afternoon we headed to the strip where we took baby’s first Vegas picture 🙂
Then we went to the Hofbrau House for a late lunch.
It brought back memories of our vacation to Germany for Oktoberfest.

With full stomachs, we walked around the strip and looked around the new casinos that we had not been to yet. It sure is fun to people watch in Vegas, there’s always something to see.

Early the next morning I dropped Justin off at Caesar’s Palace for the conference and I spent the day reading and working on the computer. Apollo was in full vacation mode sunbathing on the patio. The 100+ degree weather did not bother him one bit.
That evening Justin and I had reservations at the restaurant in the Eiffel Tower at the Paris hotel. Since it was Sunday evening and the Steelers were playing I met Justin at the sports bar in the Paris hotel to watch the game before we went to dinner.
The dinner was an early 6 year anniversary celebration. We had a table at a window overlooking the Bellagio and watched the water fountain show every 15 minutes.
The food was fantastic and dessert was even better! In fact we ended up with two desserts since one was on the house for our celebration. They know their way to a pregnant woman’s heart! Yum!
After dinner we walked to Caesar’s Palace where the some of the Young Advisors who were in town for the conference had a party at a suite. It was a pretty cool two story suite and turns out it is where they filmed part of the movie Rainman.

The next morning bright and early I dropped Justin off again at Caesar’s Palace for the conference and I set off to do a little bit of shopping. That evening we went to Justin’s company dinner at Caesar’s Palace (sorry I don’t have any pictures of that night). It was a really nice dinner and 4 of the men there were past presidents of the association and they each said a few words. It really showed that these people are passionate about what they do and truly care about the association. After the dinner the Young Advisors were having another event at the Shadow Bar so we stopped by there for a while before heading home.

On our last full day there Justin didn’t have to be at the conference until 3:15 pm so we finally had a chance to sleep in! We kept hearing on the news and our iPhone weather app that there was a storm coming…all day the clouds were building and building. We left the house to grab a late lunch before Justin had to be at the conference. When we left the wind was howling and as we drove away big fat rain drops slowly started coming down. We stopped at a sandwich place and I sat out on the patio with the dog while Justin went inside to order food. In a matter of two minutes the sky opened and the rain came pouring down like I’ve never seen it before. There was lightning and really really loud thunder, Apollo did not like it one bit, he was in my lap whimpering and shivering. So we ran back to the car in the flooded parking lot and ate lunch in the car. It then took us an hour to get to Caesar’s Palace and an hour and a half for me to get back to the house. There was so much flooding, accidents and debris on the freeways. And it all happened so fast, it gave me a new appreciation for the term “flash flood.” We both grew up in the desert and remember all the desert thunderstorms we loved growing up. I still do love them, but not when I have to drive in them! By the time I had to go back and pick up Justin the storm had passed but there was still flooding and debris on the roads. We picked up Italian food for dinner and layed low at the house watching movies. The following day we packed up and drove back to San Diego. It was a fun, relaxing, exhausting and exciting trip all in one.

To end this post here’s my 22 week belly 🙂

Halfway!!

I am 20 weeks preggo…halfway!  Wow that kind of flew by!  I am understanding now why people always say the 2nd trimester is the best.  Here’s why I am enjoying it:

I actually look like I am pregnant now and not just a little thick around the middle.
Other than a few minor aches and pains I feel great!
Shopping for new clothes is always fun and dressing up the belly is no different.
Random strangers smile at me in public.
I get more and more people stopping to let me go in front of them, holding doors open for me and even stopping traffic to let me cross the street.
There seems to be a magical aura that surrounds a pregnant woman that makes the world take notice and become happier people.
My inie belly button is becoming an outie.
I am no longer Michelle, everyone now calls me ‘Mama’.
I love the stories I am hearing from other seasoned mama’s.
If I can put a smile on someones face by simply walking into the grocery store, then I consider it a good day!

I am in awe of this little miracle growing inside me, especially when he starts moving around, stretching, kicking and swimming in my belly. I never tire of feeling that, even in the early morning hours before the sun comes up.   I love that Justin loves my belly and the excitement I see in him when he feels him kick or we talk about our future with our little boy.

Our lives are pretty crazy right now, we are trying to get some projects done around the house before we can really start creating a nursery as well as working full time.  On the weekends and evenings, we are meeting with contractors, picking out carpet, redoing a bathroom, moving electrical and painting, on top of our social, athletic and other weekly commitments.   Once all that is done then we can get a crib and dresser and start decorating, oh JOY!  In the middle of all this madness, baby boy keeps kicking away and reminding me to pause, smile, enjoy this time and be thankful for all that we have and all that will come…God is good.

Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; his love endures forever ~1 Chronicles 16:34

And here’s my 20 week belly 🙂

Waiting for the call

Not only do I want to use this blog as a way to keep friends and family posted on what’s going on with us, but it is kind of going to be a journal for me.  Especially down the road when I start cataloging and documenting our baby’s life.  There are some things (details) that I don’t want to forget, so I plan to post them here from time to time.  One important day that I don’t want to forget was the day we found out we were pregnant, so here goes…

On the day of my pregnancy test my mom was in town.  First thing in the morning we went to my doctors office and they drew my blood.  We were chatting with the nurses and my mom had asked them when they thought they would call with the results.  The nurse said, we try to get all our phone calls done during the lunch hour and we usually call the pregnant ones first.  So with that all done, we went to the Corner Bakery for breakfast, then we did what girls do best, we went shopping!  We had a list of errands to run and places to shop at, one by one we checked them off the list.  I had my phone in my pocket on ring and vibrate and checked it every 5 minutes to make sure I didn’t miss a call.  Around lunchtime we were at DSW (my favorite shoe store), when we left we still had not heard anything.  We only had one place left to go…Babies R Us.  I had a baby shower to go to the following weekend and I was putting off getting the gift until I knew the results so I could either prepare myself to go in get a gift and leave OR my mom and I could look around at all the cute stuff.  We had not had lunch yet and by now it was about 1:30, so we decided to go to In and Out which was on the way to Babies R Us. Both of us kind of got quiet and I was mentally preparing myself for another negative result so I wouldn’t completely loose it when I got the call.  We sat outside and ate lunch. At this point Justin had started calling me and asking if I heard anything.  Finally after stalling long enough I said lets just go get this over with, so we go to Babies R Us.  I printed the registry from the kiosk and we wandered around while I looked at the registry to determine what I wanted to buy.  Once I figured it out, we had to walk across the store to the other side to get it and we ended up walking through all the baby furniture, cribs, dressers, rocking chairs, etc…I was literally smack dab in the middle of the store and my phone rang.  I honestly thought about not answering it, I held it staring at it for a few seconds before finally deciding to answer.  It was my favorite nurse and she said “Congratulations, you are pregnant!” I had to ask her to repeat herself to be sure I heard her right.  She assured me that my numbers came back well within the positive range and she wanted me to come back in two days for a repeat test to make sure the numbers were doubling.  After hanging up my mom and I hugged and we sat in the rocking chairs and cried for a few minutes.  I can only imagine what the sales man was thinking as he watched the whole scene.  Positive!! I am pregnant!  When I caught my breath I remembered why we were there and we set off to find the gift I was buying and my mom picked up a copy of ‘What to Expect When You are Expecting’.  As much as I wanted to linger around the store, I couldn’t wait to tell Justin and I didn’t want to tell him on the phone.  Luckily his office was about 10 minutes down the road, so we headed over there.  On the way, I am calling him to tell him that we are coming over so I can ‘show my mom his office’, he wasn’t picking up my calls.  We get there and all the doors into his office are locked and they change to codes often, so I had no idea what the new code was and couldn’t get in.  So I used the keypad outside the door to call into his office (also while I am simultaneously calling him on his cell phone) and he didn’t pick up, I called the admin desk and no one picked up.  I was getting frustrated and started knocking on the door, finally a lady opened it for me and I explained who I was and we set off to Justin’s office.  He was not there…no one was there.  I started thinking about it and realized it was a little after 3:00 on a Friday, which usually means happy hour.  So as we are pulling out of the parking lot Justin calls me, I explained that we were at his office and he confirmed my suspicions that he was at happy hour with the guys.  They knew that Justin was waiting for the results so they took him out for a drink to get his mind off of things.  I hung up without telling him because I really wanted to tell him in person.  He said he was on his way home, so we met him there. As I walked into the house I gave him a hug and told him we were pregnant!  He was thrilled!  It took some time to sink it and over the next few days I had to keep reminding myself that it was true.

The really special thing about that weekend was Sunday was Mothers Day. My mom was still in town and we all went to church.  At the end of the service the all the kids came in with roses and handed them out to all the mom’s.  Not everyone at church knew that we were pregnant yet, but one couple who did had their little boy give me a rose, it was a touching moment!  Justin also gave me a really sweet Mother’s Day card.  I was still in that surreal mode where I couldn’t believe I was actually celebrating Mother’s Day in a different way.  It was such a special, emotional weekend and I am so glad my mom was there to share it with us.

Follow up & my little kicker

We had our follow up appointment with my OB yesterday and overall everything looks great!  My blood pressure and weight gain is good.  Baby’s heartbeat is still strong.  The only thing we need to check on later is my placenta.  Right now my placenta is low in my uterus (it typically is at the top), most of the time as the baby grows the placenta can migrate further up.  So that  means I get another ultrasound around 28 weeks (yay, more pictures of baby!) to check and see where my placenta is.  If it moves up, great!  If it doesn’t move or continues to go further down, then it could cover the cervix which means the baby will not be able to get into the birth canal for delivery, which means a C-Section will be scheduled.  The baby is perfectly fine and healthy and my doctor is not concerned at all. He said only about 4% of women who have a low lying placenta end up having complete blockage of the cervix, most of them end up “fixing themselves”.  So I’m not worried, I would prefer not to have a C-Section…but of course if I need to then we will.

On another note, I’ve started feeling the baby move! A few weeks ago I felt something several times, but was not sure if it was the baby or not.  While we were in Oregon I was feeling the same sensation, only stronger and more often so I knew it was him, and have been feeling him more and more since then. Last night while I was eating tangerines in bed (my latest food obsession) I started feeling him move around again so I put my hand on my belly and was so excited that I could feel him from the outside, so I quickly grabbed Justin’s hand and he gave Justin a good kick!  Guess he likes tangerines!

I really don’t like posts without pictures so I am leaving you with a (dark & blurry) picture of Justin’s soccer game last night.  I have yet to master the art of shooting sports.  Now that I am thinking about it….I’m convinced that’s why baby was kicking up a storm last night, he wants to come out and play with daddy!  So I guess my little kicker is going to upgrade me from a soccer wife to a soccer mom 🙂
