Daddy Daycare

Every woman is different when it comes to being a stay at home mom vs staying in the workplace.  I know that most women are not able to work from home with the type of career they have, or for financial reasons they cannot stop working, or some women need that connection and identity outside of being a stay at home mom.  Many people have strong opinions why it should be one way or another, I am not here to say that one way is better than the other or even the way it should be.  Every woman is different, I am just sharing my personal experience.

My parents had their own business and my mom worked out of our home.  Growing up, my mom was always there if I needed her.  If I forgot something she could bring it to me, if I was not feeling well she was able to stay home with me, on days when we had pep rallies and other school activities, my mom was able to come and cheer me on.  Justin was raised the same way.  And I want to do the same for my kids.  When I got pregnant we knew that I would not be able to quit working altogether, but, it was also not worth putting Jacob in daycare since it is ridiculously expensive and my paycheck would just be thrown into the cost of daycare.  Besides, I didn’t want to do that anyway, I wanted to be home with my child.

Fortunately, I work for some amazing people and have the kind of job that allows me to work from home and go into the office one day a week.  It is a challenge to get work done at home with a baby.  Especially one that only takes 30 minute naps!  But somehow, I’ve been able to get it done.  The things that require more than 15 minutes of my time get done at night after he goes to bed.

So what does Jacob do on the one day a week I go into the office?  He hangs out with Daddy! We are also fortunate that Justin has the kind of job that he is able to be home with Jacob one day a week.  I love this set up because I get the best of both worlds. I can be at home with my son, but also keep my own identity in the workplace AND Justin gets some quality time with Jacob.   What’s even better is because Justin has this time with him, he knows what it is like to be home with him all day.  He knows I don’t sit around the couch watching soap operas and eating bon bons, he knows that Jacob needs to be entertained, he knows how to do the routine and knows that he only naps for 30 minutes and that 30 minutes is not really enough time to do much else than go to the bathroom, eat something and maybe answer an email here and there.  He knows how exhausting it is, he knows how you always have to stay one step ahead of him, and he knows how much stuff you have to take anytime you go anywhere with him.  Because he knows how much work it is, he tells me all the time that he appreciates me and everything I do.  I feel so blessed to have a husband who loves me and understands.

The first day Justin watched Jacob, this is what I saw when I walked into our bedroom after putting Jacob to bed.

photo 1 (2)Pure exhaustion.  Even the dog was tired!

Now that we’re in more of a “routine” and we are used functioning in our new lifestyle, it is easier.  While it is still exhausting, Jacob is getting more and more fun every day with being able to interact with him more and see him squeal in delight at something or get a serious look on his face when he is trying to figure something out.  Justin is enjoying this time even more.  I even convinced him to try wearing Jacob in a carrier.  The two carriers I have are wonderful,  but he can only be worn facing in towards me, sometimes he doesn’t like that because he wants to see what is going on.  So a friend of mine gave me her Baby Bjorn, Justin put it on and Jacob LOVED it!  We took the dog for a walk and Jacob was giggling and squealing at everything he saw (mostly the dog, he loves to watch the dog).  I think Daddy Daycare has approached a new level since the Bjorn has been discovered!

And no, Justin does not drink beer all day while watching Jacob, this photo was taken in the evening after I got home 🙂

A visit with Uncle Terry

It has been a busy busy week!  We left on Sunday to go to Justin’s parents house for a couple of days to visit with Justin’s uncle Terry who was in town from Kentucky.  Before we left we took his 20 week old pictures.  These pictures were so fun to take and I couldn’t decide which one I liked the best so I give you two.
IMG_9178edHe was a wiggle worm and kept grabbing the giraffe’s arm and pulling him over.  I know there is going to come a day when I will be begging and bribing him to sit still for this picture.
IMG_9185ed When we arrived to Justin’s parents house, everyone was outside in the pool. Which is a good place to be when it is 90 degrees outside!  After getting settled in we got Jacob in his bathing suit and Justin took him for a little swim.
IMG_9209ed

He wasn’t particularly a fan…he didn’t scream or cry, but he didn’t necessarily love it either, as you can tell from the look on his face in the picture.  He loves his bath, so I don’t think it was the water, I think it had to do with the temperature since the water was pretty cool.  We will keep at it especially since it is starting to warm up for summer!

The next day the boys went golfing and Jacob and I went to visit my best friend Stacey and her family.  Both her boys love Jacob and her oldest wanted to hold him the entire time. It was pretty cute!
photo 1 (3)Justin, his dad, Uncle Terry & Cousin Tim had a great time golfing (or at least Justin did, he shot a 78!).  They came across a herd (or a flock?) of big horn sheep on the golf course.
BighornOur family is also a dog loving family, we always end up with several dogs running around whenever we get together.  Apollo will always be my first baby 🙂 although he doesn’t get as much attention from me as he used to, I know he is enjoying the break from being the primary subject for my camera.  We had 4 dogs altogether and they all got along great!
IMG_9234edWillie and Bogey (the two black and white dogs), have a more laid back personality and lounge around and watch the world go by.  Where Apollo and Otto (the brown dog) are busy bodies, they are always hunting for lizards, walking the perimeter of the yard and chasing all the blackbirds out of the trees.  Jacob loved watching them walk by and run around, it was pure entertainment for him.

All in all it was a fun few days!  We loved visiting with Uncle Terry, Jacob was very happy to snuggle with him!

We enjoyed the warm sunshine

Baby Dedication

A couple of weeks ago our church had a baby dedication, there were 7 families that participated!  Our church family was such a huge support to us during our journey to getting pregnant and it was a special day to celebrate all the new babies.

Since then, I have had several people ask me exactly what a baby dedication is.  Basically, it is the parents commitment before the God to raise their child according to God’s Word and God’s ways. The parents are making a promise to the Lord to do everything within their power to raise the child in a godly way, prayerfully until they can make a decision on their own to follow God.

Another part of the dedication is encourage the congregation/witnesses to pledge their support to the parents to assist in the spiritual development of their child. As witnesses to the dedication service, the church members and family members pledge to offer guidance to the child and agree to be a resource to the parents.  As we all know, it takes a village to raise a child, and it is nice to know we have our parents and church family to support us in time of need.

Each family chose a picture of their child and a verse. Here’s what we chose for Jacob…

This is one of my favorite pictures of him. It is not by any means a technically perfect photo, it was taken with my iPhone and it is a little fuzzy.  But it is, what I’ve learned in my photography class, an emotionally perfect photo.  I love the look in his eyes and the smile he is giving, while it is fuzzy, it has a strong emotion with it and sometimes an emotionally perfect photo is better than a technically perfect photo.

I prayed for this child, and the Lord has granted me what I asked of him. So now I give him to the Lord. For his whole life he will be given over to the Lord.” And he worshiped the Lord there. – 1 Samuel 1:27-28 (NIV)

Ninety

My Grandma turned ninety this month!  And she looks fantastic!  I am pretty sure I know her secret, ladies take note…attitude!  My grandma is one of the most positive, uplifting, loving people I know and she has a great attitude about everything.  I truly believe that a lot of faith, courage, and a positive attitude can go a loooong way.  She is very social and loves to spend time with family and all her friends.  For as long as I can remember she has always loved playing cards and she still does.  She has an infectious laugh and a twinkle in her eye.  I have a feeling that if we were the same age we would have been good friends, but I would much rather have her as a grandma, she is pretty special.

I hope that I can live my life with the same positive outlook and attitude that she does.  I mean how many ninety year olds do you know that are talking about redecorating their living room,  “The walls need some color, new drapes and couch“.   She is such an inspiration

My mom, Jacob and I drove in to see her on her birthday.  We had lunch with her and all her girlfriends.  Grandma brought a bottle of wine for everyone at our table and got cake for everybody in the retirement home where she lives. It was so fun to see her interact with the staff and other residents, they all love her and she was showered with gifts, cards, balloons and lots and lots of hugs and birthday wishes.  It was a special day.

After lunch we went back to her apartment where she snuggled with Jacob for a while and opened up her birthday cards and gifts

That weekend, my aunt and uncle hosted a big party with all the family and friends of the family to celebrate her birthday.  The party was on the day of my moms birthday so we celebrated her too!

Easter

Apparently being born on a Sunday means your weekly “birthdays” fall on a lot of holidays, at least that has been the case so far…Jacob was 1 month old on Superbowl Sunday (ok technically that’s not a holiday, maybe it should be?), he was 10 weeks old on St. Patrick’s Day and then he turned 12 weeks old on Easter Sunday! Our 3 month old is starting to get the hang of this picture thing and instead of giving us the how did I get stuck with these crazy people as my parents look…he started cracking a smile and I caught a glimpse of it with my camera.

IMG_7963edA few things…Jacob has found his voice and has been babbling a lot lately.  He still loves his hands and is trying to figure out how to get both fists into his mouth.  Everyone says that babies eye color stops changing around 3 months, if that is the case, then Jacob’s eyes are a blue grey.  Now we are guessing what color his hair will be?  And our 15 lb 3 month old is wearing 6 month old clothes already!

Our Easter weekend was fun and filled with family and friends.  My grandma was on a little Spring Break and was staying at my Aunt & Uncle’s house for a few days.  So on Friday, Jacob and I drove to Oceanside so he could spend some time with his Oma.

IMG_7960ed

On Saturday we packed up the car and drove to the desert.  On the way we made a stop at Vista Point to feed the baby, change his diaper, walk the dog and clean up all the dog throw up in the backseat.  While we were there we took in the view and showed Jacob the town that we both grew up in…he was more interested in trying to get his fist into his mouth.

IMG_7984edOnce we arrived, Jacob’s Aunt Stacey & Sue and cousin Lisa and her family were there and we had a great afternoon visiting with them.

IMG_7990edIMG_7988ed

Unfortunately, what Justin thought was allergies he had been fighting turned out to be some kind of 48 hour bug so he was in bed for most of the day.  On Sunday morning he was feeling a little bit better and we were able to get a family picture for Jacob’s first Easter.

IMG_8000edThat afternoon more family and friends came to visit, first up were Judy & Karen

When it came time for Sarah to hold him she knew exactly how to make Jacob happy… stand up while holding him, he gets a little restless if you are sitting down.

IMG_8007ed

And we were so happy to see Monica and her contagious smile 🙂

IMG_8020ed

Since Justin was still not feeling 100% he was not allowed to get too close to Jacob, so Apollo enjoyed being back in first place for a day and soaked up all the attention he could get.

It was a wonderful weekend with friends and family celebrating our risen Lord. Happy Easter!

He is not here; he has risen, just as he said ~ Matthew 28:6

The family he started

As I mentioned in an earlier post, my family recently lost my grandfather.  I talked about how my grandpa always used to say how blessed we were to have the family that we do.  I always replied to him that we had this family because of him (and grandma!) They both are an amazing example of the kind of people to be, how to treat others and how to live life.  My grandpa was part of the greatest generation that served our country and that alone made him a pretty remarkable person.  Some of the best memories I have of grandpa are from all of our travels together.  He was a planner and you could always count on him to have a detailed itinerary to follow and a video camera in hand.  We traveled Europe visiting relatives and learning about our family heritage, we took many RV trips around the United States and spent countless weekends boating at the river.  I’ll always remember grandpa’s hugs.  He would come up to me at any given time and give me a hug and tell me he loved me and that he was proud of me, not just for hello or goodbye, but just because.  On top of the hugs he would also randomly start massaging my shoulders, not because I asked him to, but just because he knew it felt good.  He did this to everyone in the family, he was a strong man with a huge heart for his loved ones.

The family got together the night before the funeral at my aunt and uncle’s house for a German feast.  My grandpa was born in Germany and we have always enjoyed family recipes of delicious German dishes.  It was hard since it was the first family gathering without grandpa, but in keeping with his passion for family it was exactly what he would have wanted.  On the other hand, it was also a fun night since Jacob got to meet the extended family for the first time! He has so many aunts, uncles & cousins who adore him and little cousins to run around with when he gets older.

The next day was the service at the church my grandparents belonged to for years.  It was a really nice service filled with family and friends, some who we have not seen in a long time. IMG_7532The service was followed by a reception where we were able to visit with everyone.  It was so great hearing all the stories about grandpa and seeing all the people there who loved him.  Jacob was a trouper and let everyone pass him around and get their turn to hold him.

First up was Justin’s sister Stacey

It was a day of celebrating Grandpa and family.  Thank you Grandpa for the example you were, for creating this family, your hugs, massages and memories.  We love you and miss you.

Bittersweet

Today is a bittersweet day…my grandpa passed away last night, our family gained another guardian angel to watch over us.  I am so thankful that I had all 4 of my grandparents at my wedding and that I knew them all well into my adulthood, since then we’ve lost 3 of them.  It is hard when you have to say good bye but I cherish the memories I have with them.  I remember praying over the years that my grandparents would be around to meet our kids and I am so grateful that my dad brought my grandma and grandpa over to meet Jacob that first week after he was born.  When we were coming up with names for Jacob we wanted his middle name to tie in both sides of our family, Carl is Justin’s middle name, his grandfathers name and my grandpa’s middle name.  My grandpa was a wonderful man who served our country, worked hard and together with my grandma created an amazing family.  He always talked about how lucky we were to have the family we did and I always told him that we had this family because of him.  We love you grandpa and you will be missed.
IMG_6905On another note, Jacob is now 6 weeks old!
IMG_7403In Jacob’s 5 week post I mentioned that he had been fussy for a while and thanks to some advice from seasoned momma friends and a book I am reading, I learned that during weeks 5 and 6 fussiness and crying peaks.  Whew, I was so glad to hear that!  I kept wondering what was going on, was I eating something that bothered him, was something wrong with him, should I call the doctor, did we have a colicky baby on our hands??? It was exhausting, if he wasn’t sleeping or eating he was crying and it was almost impossible to soothe him.  He wanted to eat much more frequently, I was feeling like an open bar!  With the exception of nighttime sleep, he wanted to take all of his naps on me, which meant I wore him in the Moby wrap everyday so he could do so.  Truthfully, I really didn’t mind that part, I love the Moby and it is a great way to snuggle with him without putting the stress on your arms or back from holding him for hours on end and it made me feel like I was pregnant again (as much as I love having Jacob here, I do miss being pregnant).  This phase went on for 4 days, then it was like a light switch, he woke up happy, smiling and back to his normal self, and so far so good (at least until we hit the next growth spurt). I am hoping I haven’t spoken too soon 🙂

Another thing we did this past week is bottle feeding. We got a bottle ready with a number 1 nipple (the smallest size) and Justin and Jacob got comfortable and Justin started feeding him.  Jacob took the bottle really well and ate the first two ounces without any problems, then…he started crying and fussing and wouldn’t take any more.  So Justin stopped, calmed him down and I was racking my brain trying to think of why in the world would he freak out like that, I knew he was still hungry because I know he takes way more than 2 ounces when he nurses.  At first I just figured it was part of his fussy phase, then I thought, maybe we should try a bigger nipple.  So we put on the number 2 size and Justin tried again.  Problem solved!  Jacob ate the rest like a champ.  The next time we tried we started with the number 2 nipple and he took the whole bottle with no problem.  It was so sweet to see the bonding between Jacob and Justin as they were feeding, Jacob was gazing up at Justin and it warmed my heart!  At the same time it made me sad that I was not feeding him, that is such a special time and I love it.  But I do want Justin to have that connection too and I want to be able to get away or enjoy a glass of wine once in a while and this way someone else can feed him when needed.

Showers of love

We always talk about how blessed we are to have such an amazing support group of family and friends.  We both come from big families that truly enjoy being together and celebrating together.  We have some fantastic friends from college and church who have become our San Diego family.  We both also work with some pretty awesome people which is great since we spend all day with them during the week.  Plus our childhood friends, clients turned friends and others who we have created friendships with along the way.  When we announced that we were pregnant I knew there would be plenty of people who would be so happy for us, but I never imagined the outpouring of love that came from everyone or all the people who wanted to celebrate with us.  It has really been special.  These people came together and gave baby Frisco 4 baby showers, they’ve sent gifts from all over and they can’t wait to meet him and welcome him into our circle of family and friends.  I intended to get a group photo at each of my showers and take lots of pictures along the way…but that didn’t really happen.  I’ve learned there are times when I am in the photography mode and want to document everything, but there are also times when I just want to kick back and enjoy it all.  Thankfully there were others who took on the job of photographer so I do have a few pictures to share.

First up was Justin’s office.  It is not very common that an office that consists of mostly men would get together for a baby shower, but with the wonderful planning of the (female) office administrative assistant they gave us a fun shower!  We played baby Pictionary, where everyone agreed that hopefully baby Frisco will not inherit our drawing skills, although I have to say that Justin does have a pretty good artistic side to him, but he wasn’t showing it off that day.  We had lots of snacks and yummy cupcakes.  We opened gifts and received lots of well wishes and a personalized poem for baby Frisco. pics2Then it was time for family.  My aunt hosted both sides of our family at her house.  Most of our family lives in Southern California so almost everyone was able to come.  We played some games, including one where we all had the name of some famous baby, group of kids, real or cartoon on our backs and we had to ask people yes or no questions to try and figure out who we were.  It was a great way to get the party started.  Lunch and lots of yummy treats were served.  While opening gifts we had the person whose gift I was opening tell a funny story about Justin or I when we were a baby, which brought on some laughs!  Everyone brought books along with their gifts to build a library for baby Frisco and I had them all write a note to him on the inside of the books so we can think of them as we read along.  I am so excited about the library he has now!  Since it was November and we are having a little man, we had a moustache theme in honor of Movember.
IMG_7291IMG_7292IMG_7293

Next we celebrated with my girlfriends.  One of my San Diego girlfriends paired up with my best childhood friend and threw us another shower.  I love all these women and the fact that they are all currently moms to one or two little ones makes for a wonderful resource/support group.  This is the group where I soak up the stories and advice and am so thankful that I have them to turn to and lean on when needed. The day was filled with lots of personal touches and crafty Pinterest ideas.  The girls who threw the shower are some pretty serious San Diego Charger fans and they did have a little bit of Charger touches here and there…but as hard as it was for them, they did respect Justin’s team and decorated with the Pittsburg Steelers in mind.
IMG_6599This was the one shower that I did get a group shot

IMG_6591And remember these girls…they now have their little girls cradled in their arms!
IMG_6594 Last but not least was my office.  Opposite of Justin my office consists of mostly women, and with women a baby is definitely a cause for celebration! Two of the girls got together and threw a shower filled with lots of yummy food and champagne cocktails (virgin for me of course)!  It is so great to work with people who enjoy being together even after we have worked together all day long.  Almost everyone in the office was able to come and baby Frisco got so many fantastic gifts.  Sadly we didn’t take any pictures at that shower, but we did get a picture of the adorable Little Prince cake!

Little Prince Cake

Outside of the showers, we’ve had friends take us out to dinner or brunch to celebrate, we get phone calls, emails and texts from people asking if there is anything we need and we are getting gifts from our parents friends. It really has been overwhelming how awesome people are.  The bottom line is, it’s really not about the parties and gifts but all the love that everyone has for this little boy.  Who knew he would be so popular before he was even born, he is a pretty lucky guy!

Thank you everyone for all your support, we can’t wait for you to meet our little boy!

Dog Thanksgiving

Another Thanksgiving has come and gone…I love the fall season and time spent with family, all the yummy food and laughter around the dinner table.  We are very blessed in many ways and I have so much to be thankful for.  Most importantly, I am so thankful for my husband, there is no such thing as a perfect marriage, or a perfect person, but I do think we are perfect for each other.  Yes, there are times when he frustrates me and I know I frustrate him…but what trumps those times are all the wonderful things that he does.  The supportive man that he is.  The way he makes me laugh and always tries to make me smile when I am in a bad mood.  He takes care of me.  He listens (sometimes).  He understands my stubbornness (or maybe he just tolerates it). He is compassionate and caring and I know he will be a fantastic role model for our son.  Of course I am so thankful for our baby boy growing inside of me, I am thankful for an easy pregnancy, and I can’t wait to meet him!

We headed to Palm Desert for Thanksgiving.  The warm holiday (it was 85 degrees) was spread out over 3 days of celebrating with friends and family and…our dogs.  We are a dog loving family.  I didn’t get a single picture of people over the 3 days, but I did take pictures of the dogs.  We were trying to get them all together for one picture, but that didn’t really happen, so here they are in a few pictures.

First up we have Joyce feeding her grand dogs – Callie, Pichu & Apollo

Then there is little Leo who is blind, so he stayed safely away from the chaos.
The star of the day was 11 week old Molly.  She played, and played and played…
She even fell in the pool, we now know that she can swim…
After all the excitement she takes a nap in the comfortable hose coil
Here is one of the group attempts that includes Bogey
It appears that we have a black/white and tan/white theme with our dogs.  Hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Projects

My dad is a pretty handy guy to have around, he is the kind of guy that can fix, build or make anything related a house, restoring/maintaining a car, boat, houseboat, RV and pretty much anything else.  Growing up our garage was like a mini Home Depot and my parents are the kind of people who will take on these projects themselves rather than hiring someone to do it for them.   I remember spending hours in the garage with my dad while he taught me how to change the oil in my car and we spent countless hours washing our cars, RV, boats and if I didn’t do something right or good enough he would make me do it again, and again until it was done correctly.  Of course I hated him for that at the time, but now I get it…  When I went off to college my dad sent along with me a tool bag complete with a power drill.  So those habits rubbed off on me.  Justin worked construction for a few summers and is pretty handy himself and likes to do things with his hands.  He also was hired by his parents friends as a kid to wash & detail their cars and he spent many hours working at his parents salon.  So we both were raised to be do it “yourselfers” and are always looking for the next project to do.

I have been wanting new carpet for a long time, pretty much since we bought our place.  We’ve done so many other projects around our house but the carpet never got replaced.  We decided that we would get new carpet when I got pregnant before the baby came…little did we know that would take 3 years…but the time is here and we started carpet shopping/research.  These house projects are dangerous because one thing always leads to another and we end up doing 7 projects when we intended to do one.  When we had the carpet guy over to give us a quote and measure out the square footage we mentioned that we didn’t necessarily need carpet in our vanity area of our bathroom because we were planning to put tile there.  Of course he suggested getting that done before the carpet was installed so we wouldn’t get the new carpet dirty, which lead to other things we wanted to get done before the carpet was installed, like moving electrical into the hallway, cleaning out the guest bedroom & closets, painting the nursery, etc…So the new carpet set off the domino effect of projects to get done.  Anyone who has done these kind of things knows that these projects ALWAYS take longer than expected.

First up was electrical…Our 2nd bedroom served as a guest room, storage place and office.  Since we got rid of pretty much everything in that room and closets so it could serve as a nursery, we needed to create some sort of office area for our computer, printer, etc… So we ripped out a built in cabinet that was in our hallway and put in a counter and added a smaller cabinet for office supplies and to house our printer/scanner, voila instant office!  the only problem was there was no electrical to plug everything in.  So we had an electrician come out and move some electrical into the office area and install the fixings in the ceiling of the nursery so we could hang a fan.  Done!

Next up was tile…as I mentioned the vanity area of our bathroom was carpeted, ewww, I know.  And the tile that was in the shower/toilet part of the bathroom was this really annoying rock tile that was impossible to keep clean.  Funny, because I remember the flier when we were buying our house and that was a selling point, “New Rock Tile in Bathrooms!!” I couldn’t wait to rip it up.  At first we planned to rip out the shower and replace that as well, but since there was some tricky plumbing involved we didn’t feel comfortable doing it all without the help of a professional.  We got some quotes from 3 different contractors and it was going to end up being a $5,000-6,000 project.  So we decided to leave the shower alone and just redo the floors.  We (Justin) ripped up the rock tile and carpet and thanks to my dad for letting us borrow his tile saw (from his mini Home Depot garage) we installed nice clean 12×24 subway tiles.  It made a world of difference!  Justin did most of the work on this project, I was his assistant handing him what he needed (including a beer here and there, we were having a heat wave!) and holding tile during some tricky cuts in the saw. Halfway through the project I told him I was feeling kind of guilty that I couldn’t help him with a lot of the heavy labor stuff, he smiled and said “That’s okay, you can repay me in a few months when you go into labor.”  Yep, that’s the kind of man I married 🙂  Done!

Then there was paint…Justin and I have pretty much painted our entire house literally from top to bottom.  Now being pregnant, I wasn’t too comfortable with being exposed to paint fumes for a long period of time, so Justin’s parents offered to come help and the three of them painted the nursery walls and hung a new fan while I cleaned out more stuff around the house. Done!

Finally, carpet…This was the one thing that didn’t require any work on our part, except it did.  We removed all the baseboards in our bedroom.  We had to pack up and move all the small things and everything that was at the bottom of our closets downstairs.  By now the nursery was empty so after carpeting that room, all the furniture in our bedroom was moved in there.  After the carpet was all in, we had to move everything back.  But it was SO worth it!  Done!

Start the nursery…After many trips to Babies R Us, Buy Buy Baby, online research and reading Baby Bargains we finally made a choice on a crib and dressers.  The main reason why we choose the one we did was because of the height of the dressers, all the ones we looked at were so short, since one dresser will also serve as a changing table I kept picturing us tall people bending over changing thousands of diapers and it made my back ache just thinking about it.  We came across a set that was much “taller” than the rest and I was excited to find a tall person’s dresser.  If you didn’t already know most baby furniture takes 8-13 weeks to be delivered, of course that was the case with the set we decided on.  With the crib, I didn’t mind waiting that long since the baby would be in our room for the first few months anyway, but I needed the dressers so I would have a place to put all the clothes and everything else we will be getting in the months to come.  So after some phone calls to Buy Buy Baby we were told that they had all 3 pieces in stock (yay!) so we didn’t have to wait 8-13 weeks, but we also needed to buy it right away before someone else did.  There was a hold on one dresser, so we waited a few days and they called and said that the other people didn’t want the dresser so all 3 pieces were ours and they would put our name on them and hold them for us for a week.  So we go to Buy Buy Baby the next day to confirm that they had everything and purchase it.  Like everything else, it was not an easy ordeal.  To make a long story short, they told us that they only had 1 dresser in stock, not the other dresser and they didn’t have the crib.  Of course we were frustrated since we were told on the phone that they had all 3 in stock and were on hold for us.  So after much back and forth looking in the back stock room and checking the inventory at another store a few hours away, we ended up with 3 people helping us including the manager.  After an hour and a half they “found” our crib in the back with our name on it so now we had a crib and one dresser.  So we negotiated buying the other dresser off the floor display since it was in good shape.  Justin was able to work out a deal and we had 20% off coupons for each item plus 10% off the dresser from the floor, we made arrangements to pick it up a few days later.  When we went to get the furniture, the dresser from the floor display was all packaged up in a box and at first we thought oh, how nice they packaged it up for us.  Then the manager came and told us that a new one came in sometime in the last few days and they gave us the new one (and we still had the 10% discount)!  So with a little help from some friends we now have furniture in the nursery. Done!

Making room for baby…I know the baby itself is just another person and will not take up that much space.  It’s everything that comes with the baby that I need to make room for!  We had an old bookshelf in the corner of our living room that I cleaned out and we got rid of, so now we have a good sized empty space.  We put up some shelves for the books and the space below is going to be for the swing and other baby toys, blankets, etc…I just need to get some baskets or some kind of dresser to house those things.

Other than some finishing touches to the nursery, the only other thing we need to get done is install new baseboards in our bedroom and bath. It has been a pretty fast-paced, hard-working few months, with countless trips to Goodwill, ACE Hardware, Home Depot and the dump, but now we are seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. From now until the end of the year we have lots of fun things planned like baby showers, birthday parties, holiday parties, so I am glad we got all this done when we did. And everything looks great!
